Bobby Singer - Salvation LP - Various Labels

Bobby Singer is a one-man emotional post-hardcore band emanating from Limoges, France. The band carries the name of the Supernatural character Bobby Singer but is not associated nor thematically carries the storyline of the series. Everything from musical performance on all the involved instruments to the production and mastering is done by Olivier, who’s also active in a punk rock group Mr. Godson for over a decade. Unlike Mr. Godson, who are digging deep into foundations of punk rock music, Bobby Singer explores the essentials of the French emo/screamo scene, so characteristic for groups that emerged at the beginning of the millennium.

Salvation represents a debut full-length recording that carries nine profoundly emotive compositions, empowered by the excellent musicianship. Olivier incorporated the essentials of emo, screamo, post-hardcore, melodic hardcore, post-rock, and indie rock music into his sound to achieve a particular dark and depressive atmosphere. Perhaps the presence of emo and screamo elements is the most dominant one, but Bobby Singer graciously appears with such diverse sound, accomplished by implementing accentuations characteristic for the beforementioned genres. Salvation contains equal dosages of both charismatic darkened melodies and detailed massive sound, which is mostly hearable at the modern post-hardcore records. Olivier paid so much attention to every aspect of his debut full-length record. Therefore, every provided composition grasps even more subtly hidden details, ready to be discovered by the potential listeners.

Bobby Singer nails down melancholic atmosphere through a series of thoughtfully arranged harmonizations, mainly achieved through appealing melodic themes, arpeggiated segments, octaves, and other exquisite orchestrations. The guitars are dueling for dominance during the entire recording but also offering enough polyphonous tones to accommodate the state of desperation included in the overall melancholic ambiance. The warm-sounding bass guitar strikes from beneath with precisely performed basslines and liberates enough powerful low-end tones to satisfy dualities surrendered by both guitars. The energetic drumming performance mainly sticks to technically demanding moderate rhythmical sequences, with occasional explorations into faster rhythms. Constant splashing over the cymbals supplies another layer of sharp tones to the subtly chaotic ambiance. The lead vocals are articulating through desperate shoutouts, controlled screams, and occasional clean chants. Every supplied chant is a well-planned vocal maneuver, thoughtfully applied to accommodate a particular moment within these numbers.

Judging by the complete material and considering all the circumstances around the globe, Olivier spent quite some time working on this brilliant post-hardcore album. Bobby Singer grasps all the qualities of emo, screamo, post-hardcore music by merging these exceptional genres with accentuations borrowed from melodic hardcore, post-rock, and indie rock. He completely understands the fundamentals of these genres and applies raw emotions, depression, melancholy, darkened ambiance through delicate lyrics and remarkable vocal articulations. Salvation comes on standard black vinyl, available at Fresh Outbreak Records, Crapoulet Records, APB Records, Wacky Cats Records, and En Soirée Je Danse Pas Records. Make sure to check out this record if you’re into precisely executed melancholic post-hardcore music.
