Boston and New Hampshire’s twangy indie-rock band Happy Just To See You (abbreviated to “HJ2CU”) announced Last Week’s Horse last month, and today they share their catchiest song yet with the upbeat single “Rat U Out” from the band’s upcoming third album.
Sound V System shared the new single, writing, “Using their intricate mix of indie rock, alt-country, and emo, Happy Just To See You tunes into the power of the album format to create a dynamic listening experience.”
Fronted by Evan Benoit, the band sounds in a similar vein to fellow twangy indie-rockers like Good Looks, Ratboys, or MJ Lenderman. While HJ2CU has always had a foot in country, their next record takes up their hint of Americana up a notch, along with the tempo.
Courtney Swain (Bent Knee, Courtney and Brad) produced the record, Brad Krieger (Ian Sweet, Horse Jumper Of Love, Friendship) mixed and mastered it. Both Swain and Krieger contributed additional instruments and vocals across the record, including synth on “Rat U Out.”
Atwood Magazine announced the album last month, writing of the title track, “A charged and churning introduction to the record’s emotional core, the song arrives as both a thesis statement and a point of entry — a restless, full-bodied collision of aching grit and unfiltered urgency that captures the band at their most self-aware, self-questioning, and alive.”
