Perhaps the Charger is a relatively new band on the scene, but this Oakland, California based trio comprises of some renowned musicians who’re shaping the punk rock scene for more than three decades. This characteristic band includes Matt Freeman (Rancid, Operation Ivy, Downfall, Devils Brigade, etc.) on lead vocals and bass guitar, Jason Willer (Jello Biafra And The Guantanamo School Of Medicine, UK Subs, Cross Stitched Eyes, Alaric, Brainticket, The Born Uglys, The Enemies, etc.) on drums, and Andy McGee on guitars. Since 2018, Charger has released a series of recordings such as a debut self-titled EP, a Flexi 7” including Crackdown, UV digitally printed 12” version of Watch Your Back, self-titled 12” EP, Flexi 7” record including Victim and another Flexi 7” for Stay Down.
Watch Your Back/Stay Down is their latest release on Pirates Press Records, pressed on a double A-Sided 12” vinyl. This record includes the same versions of the songs as a UV digitally printed 12” version of Watch Your Back and Flexi 7” version of Stay Down. Charger embraces only the best affinities of rock’n’roll music and ferociousness of old school punk rock sound. You may hear the strong resemblance with the greats such as Motörhead, GBH, Zeke, Discharge, and Broken Bones, mainly because of the recognizable compelling maneuvers pulled off from the sleeves by these experienced musicians. Nevertheless, their music comes close to the greatness of the legendary Motörhead, because of the profoundly detailed combination of rock’n’roll, punk rock, and metal sound.
Matt Freeman replaced his signature virtuosities with simplified but precise basslines, which are following maniacal rhythmical sequences provided by Jason Willer. Their musicianship serves as a perfect playground for McGee’s delicate guitar shreds. These guitar maneuvers are offering a wide array of characteristic rock’n’roll riffages, harmonizations, solos, and other appropriate guitar licks. Freeman’s recognizable lead vocals are layering these orchestrations with crude shoutouts that are perfectly accommodating the energetic performance of the entire band. Both Watch Your Back and Stay Down are offering loads of entertainment but also standing out in their diverse approach to the aesthetics of rock’n’roll music.
Watch Your Back/Stay Down comes on standard black vinyl limited to 600 copies, blood-red vinyl limited to 300 copies, picture disc limited to 200, and white vinyl limited to 100. Both songs are also streamable at streaming services. Head over to Pirates Press Records and grab this brilliant 12” record.
