Tokyo alternative four-piece COCTEAU CALINES have returned with their poignant new single, “A City Made of Sorrow.” Released on the eve of Japan’s End of World War II Memorial Day, the 6-minute, 7-second protest anthem blends alternative rock and dream pop with hypnotic grooves reminiscent of early The Stone Roses, DIIV, and Wolf Alice.
Formed around vocalist and bassist Yuya Nishiyama, the band uses haunting Japanese vocals and melodic guitar textures to examine the human cost of conflict. Rather than taking political sides, “A City Made of Sorrow” delivers an earnest plea for global peace, questioning whether violence can ever truly yield resolution. Following their 2024 EP Psychopath Killer on Pelmage Records, this compelling release highlights COCTEAU CALINES’ commitment to sharing Japanese-language rock with an international audience.
