Winning Streak – We Need A Plan LP (Thousand Islands Records)

Winning Streak are back with another brilliant record that stands out in the vast sea of modern skate punk recordings. We previously had a chance to cover their debut full-length named Whichever Path You Take, initially released on compact disc in the spirit of DIY, but later received a well-deserved vinyl treatment by Thousand Island Records. This particular material brings some innovations to the group. What started as a compelling trio gradually become a technically precise quintet with the latest additions of Chris McGrath (Much The Same) on vocals and Davey Knight (Debt Cemetary/Gnarly Horse) on bass guitar. This material also includes guest appearances of Dave Nassie (No Use For A Name), Yamil Velez (Lipona), and Eddie Haddad. Therefore, their latest recording serves as a proper continuation of Whichever Path You Take, but with even more mind-blowing moments implemented along the way.

The group announced We Need A Plan with a couple of singles, such as Stop Screaming and We Live Here. Both compositions are representing a sneak peek into the profoundly detailed musicianship of the entire band, which unquestionably paid a lot of attention to even the tiniest aspect of their latest material. Winning Streak thoughtfully planned every harmonization, orchestration, and movement throughout the entire recording, with all thematics being examined and explored to the max. Therefore, the complete album appears as a marvelously conceived storyline. The latest trends in music production are entirely helping out Winning Streak to impersonate their quality in the best possible manner, and it’s vividly hearable that the contemporary technics are thoroughly uplifting the sound of the band.

Guitars are exploring every possible maneuver you can eventually think of while listening to their highly addictive music. Their maneuvers are going beyond comprehension through loads of various skillfully performed dualities, contagious harmonizations, impressive guitar licks, energetic virtuosities, and robust shreds. The guitars are continuously firing melodies in every possible direction, without leaving room for eventual avoidance. These polyphonous maneuvers are superbly planned, structured, and arranged to satisfy even the pickiest admirer of technically demanding melodic punk rock music. The bass guitar completely supports these addictive acrobatics through the full specter of equally mind-blowing basslines. The semi-distorted low-end tones are uplifting the overall listening experience by concentrating on the fundamental notes of every technicality rendered by the guitars.

The exceptional drumming performance offers a comprehensive collection of perfectly executed rhythmical sequences, entirely empowered by a full specter of various accentuations and energetic drum fills. These rhythmical acrobatics are providing enormous dynamics presented throughout the entire release but also keeping the remaining portion of the group in line. The similarities between vocals and their pairings during some compositions are most impressive, especially at ear-appealing choruses when two or three similar vocalists are performing enthralling singalongs. Their paired chants are furnishing more intensity to the complex orchestrations of the group but also inducing more emotiveness to the overall sound.

Winning Streak maintains a technically precise sound during the album without spoiling all the fun with pretentious bragging on their instruments. Quite the contrary, the band offers endless polyphonous possibilities and logical orchestrations through their dynamic melodic punk rock sound. Their impressive musicianship will suit the admirers of melodic punk rock, skate punk, and pop-punk, but you should check out their captivating music even if you’re not a punk rock enthusiast. We Need A Plan is up for a pre-order at Thousand Islands Records alongside a vinyl version of Whichever Path You Take. Each comes in eye-peeling variants, so pick up your favorite one. Make sure to check this one out!
