Reinventing a sound after a long hiatus is one of the trickiest balancing acts in modern music. When a group steps back into the studio after two full decades away, the trap is almost always nostalgia, leaning on old tricks and pretending the world hasn’t moved on. But Liege, Belgium’s own Hollywood Porn Stars have completely avoided that trap. Returning with their third full-length record, Endless Age, the Belgian outfit delivers a direct and forward-looking collection of songs that completely bypasses cheap retro gimmicks. Instead of looking back, the band confronts the passage of time head-on. The album uses the theme of a ghost, not as a symbol of loss or disappearance, but as an ongoing presence drifting through eras, memories, and personal transformations. It reflects the previous versions of ourselves and asks a central question what actually remains authentic when everything around us is changing at breakneck speed?
From a purely musical perspective, Hollywood Porn Stars has delivered a fine piece of sonic artistry where every vocal, instrumental, and percussive maneuver has its exact place and purpose. Across the entire runtime of Endless Age, the band blends indie rock, indie pop, and modern synth-pop into a comprehensive collection of songs that immediately wraps around your listening apparatus and refuses to let go long after the last notes fade away. It is an album built on emotional tension and resolution, matching thoughtful, existential lyrics with pure melodic craft. A massive focal point of the record lies in the lead vocal performance, which feels deeply soulful, passionate, and raw. Moving fluidly between whispery, intimate passages and loud melodic chants, the vocals balance between vulnerability and strength. They bring incredible emotional depth, complexity, and structural detail to the compositions, elevating the lyrical themes to front and center. You hear this clearly on tracks like “Bad Movie,” where the vocal phrasing examines illusion and social appearances, and “Wicked King,” which dives headfirst into power dynamics. On “Year Of The Snake,” the vocal delivery grows even more commanding, tackling repeating generational cycles and humanity’s fragile place in an ever-accelerating modern world.
The brilliant interplay between luxuriant synthesizers and jangly, tastefully distorted guitars makes this material so incredible. Rather than letting one texture dominate the other, Hollywood Porn Stars pairs them in complete harmony. The synths bring lush atmospheric pads, ambient sequences, and lead themes that give the record a cinematic, dreamlike scope. Meanwhile, the guitar work provides the necessary rawness, abrasion, and garage-rock punch. The guitars slice through the smooth electronic textures with sharp, overdriven riffs and catchy, melodic hooks, making sure the music maintains an indie rock edge beneath its atmospheric polish. The low-end performance gives the record its deep, satisfying physical presence. The bass guitar is solely responsible for all the warmth, structural detail, depth, and heaviness anchored within the tracks. Delivering deep, dense, and melodic lines, these low ends carve out a thick groove that binds the keyboard leads with the relentless pulse. It is nearly mind-blowing how cleanly these basslines articulate within the mix, introducing massive low-end weight without ever overwhelming the higher-register instrumentation.
The exceptional drumming performance keeps the entire material locked into a tight, addictive groove. The drum work relies on a palette of well-accented, flawlessly performed, and thoughtfully assembled beats, breaks, fills, and percussive accents. Every hit of the snare and thump of the kick drum feels placed to elevate the surrounding arrangements, pushing the dynamic peaks of the songs to new heights. Endless Age speaks to a permanent human condition, an era where technology, environments, and societal structures change constantly, yet the same basic fears, desires, and relationships persist generation after generation. Tracks like “Call Them After Me” capture that generational thread with remarkable warmth, proving that behind all the atmospheric synthesis and driving guitar riffs lies a deeply human heart. Endless Age is an absolute indie masterpiece crafted by musicians who understand the science of writing catchy, memorable, and deeply engaging tunes. Hollywood Porn Stars has returned after two decades not to reclaim the past, but to deliver one of the most vital, articulate, and rewarding albums of their career. It is an impressive body of work that will appeal to fans of classic indie rock and modern atmospheric pop alike. Put this album high up on your music radar, grab a copy, press play, and let Hollywood Porn Stars show you what it means to make music that truly resists the test of time.
