Quite the contrary, you’ll notice how they incorporated some of the finest properties borrowed from alternative, garage, post-punk, and indie pop. The band wisely moves through various sonic universes while remaining loyal to their initial sonic direction, something that they do wisely, expertly, carefully, with such precision and finesse. On so many occassions, they even sound more creative, talented, knowledgable, and experienced, because those vocal, sonic, and rhyhtmic maneuvers are so precisely performed and recorded. From fundamental elements of indie rock, abrasive qualities of garage rock, and big alternative rock hooks, to all those power pop and indie pop moments where the band sounds so tender, soothing, and melodic, this material has everything you ever needed from a proper indie record.
The vocals play a significant role here, as each line, melody, or harmony enhances the listening experience to the max. You’ll notice how vocal performance serves as a centerpiece here, decorating every segment and orchestration, commanding attention, and guiding listeners from scratch to finish. The vocalist sings with a subtle detachment, keeping his harmonies calm, soothing, and relaxing, yet delivering tremendous melody and harmony atop guitars. In the meantime, the interplay between catchy, memorable, engaging, captivating themes, melodies, and harmonies delivered on lead guitar on one side, and all those jangly, angular, subtly distorted chord progressions and riffs on the other, creates a luxuriant ambiance that immensely supports the vocal performance. Beneath those lush guitar works, you’ll hear how equally impressive low ends push the envelope into the deep, dense, heavy side of the spectre. The bass guitar delivers all the warmth, depth, heaviness, and clarity this album needs, without ever overwhelming the initial sonic direction. The great deal of groove, dynamics, energy, and pace comes from exceptional drumming performance which, in this case, contributes to this sonic equation with thoughtfully, expertly, flawlessly assembled and performed beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics. Each note and beat has its place and purpose here, making “Don’t Panic” such a dynamic and captivating album.
“Don’t Panic” should be on your music radar by now, because wearemarvin deserve your utmost attention. They showcase tremendous experience and knowledge, and a knack for assembling and delivering premium indie rock songs to the table. If you love your music as catchy, melodic, emotional, groovy, and fascinating, you should purchase this gem. Head to La Pochette Surprise Records and grab it on vinyl.
