As in any other scene, singer-songwriter music is often hit or miss, with many artists delivering some of the finest work this genre has seen, and on the other side of the spectrum, those whose music might be good but does not resonate deeply. And while singer-songwriter music spans across so many music genres and subgenres at once, we all have to agree that those artists who mainly explore folk, folk pop, folk rock, Americana, blues, and other similar styles sound most convincing, sincere, and great. If you’ve been paying attention to our pages recently, then you’re probably familiar with Nick Cody And The Heartache, an outstanding UK artist whose creativity and musicianship go beyond comprehension. With “Sweet Songs & Bitter Truth,” his latest extended play, released on May 26th, he exemplifies how singer-songwriter music can be something more than just ear-appealing love songs decorated with contemporary production. As the title of this material indicates, Nick Cody And The Heartache writes exceptional compositions where every segment carries so much emotion, heart, and soul, but also explores socio-political themes in the times where those in power wage wars in all possible parts of the globe, social injustices become more than omnipresent, and the government does not care about hard-working men. This is the kind of content the music scene always needs, because it is as educational as it is emotionally resonant, forcing listeners to take a deep dive into those songs and understand what the artist aims to say with his music. Nick Cody And The Heartache’s sharp lyricism is something you definitely shouldn’t miss while listening to those songs. At first, you’re treated with the profound, poetic lyricism where Nick Cody explores love, relationships, mixed feelings, and what makes us human, but he also reveals flaws of contemporary society with clever verses and choruses. This mix of sweet and protest songs makes Nick Cody such a versatile singer-songwriter, capable of writing catchy, memorable, captivating songs in any style and genre, while covering various topics. And the amalgam of music genres involved is impressive as well. Besides the folk sound, which definitely covers indie folk, folk pop, and folk rock spectrum, you’re ears will be treated by calm, soothing, relaxing sound of indie rock, soft rock, and blues as well. The best part about it is how all those genres articulate together. Somewhere more and somewhere less, they elevate, decorate, accentuate particular segments or the entire songs, depending of the theme, mood, and atmosphere Nick Cody feels the most comfortable with at the moment.

“We Are The Many,” an exceptional introductory piece we covered previously, is a self-explanatory composition that introduces the listener to Nick Cody’s luxuriant sound. Through this composition, he demonstrates how a couple of layers of male and female performances, and a couple of instruments, can create such a tremendous impact. This protest song features beautiful vocal harmonies and jangly guitars that create such an anthemic atmosphere that calls you to resist, rebel, and revolt against the injustices in this world. “The World’s Richest Man” carries such a captivating atmosphere achieved by stacking clean, jangly, angular, tastefully accentuated chord progressions, warm-sounding basslines, and leads delivered on string instruments. Nick Cody’s voice shines in the limelight, offering another layer of melody over the top. He brings emotional depth and complexity while serving as a centerpiece of the entire composition. The additional vocal layers, back vocals, and sing-alongs further decorate the song, creating such a memorable, mesmerizing, anthemic ambiance. “That Leonard Cohen Vibe” is such a unique piece that leans much more into Americana and blues waters while still carrying that recognizable Nick Cody And The Heartache’s vibe. And while this composition carries all the instrumentations included in the previous songs, somehow they all resonate differently and uniquely. The guitars deliver that fascinating, ear-appealing southern, bluesy, Americana, twangy sound, showcased through the complex chord progressions, harmonies, and melodies. However, the string instruments shine in the limelight with such beautiful themes and leads, grounding this song more into folk, indie, and neoclassical territory. Nick Cody And The Heartache is also a master of crafting subtle, gentle, tender folk ballads. which is especially notable in songs like “Another Thin White Duke,” “Pancho & Lefty,” and “Say What You Will.” In some way or another, these songs could act as a trilogy, considering their ambiance is similar. “Another Thin White Duke” carries beautiful chord progressions, profoundly melodic harmonies, and occasional string leads, but it works as a stripped-down folk song that definitely remains in your ears long after the last notes fade away. “Pancho & Lefty” also relies upon calm, soothing, relaxing ambiance, yet it leans much more into stripped-down Americana territory. Once again, Nick Cody’s incredible voice carries the majority of the melody while the guitars and strings create a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. This epic sonic journey comes to an end with “Say What You Will,” a slow-motion tune where all the fundamental elements of folk, blues, and rock levitate around. Nick Cody’s voice shines with tremendous emotion and power here, while the additional back vocals offer that calm, melodic, soothing support that in so many ways acts as a counterweight. The orchestrations follow the aesthetics of the entire material, but it seems like a bit more distortion has been applied on the guitars, giving more power to this instrument while retaining that folk rock sound. It’s such a perfect closure of an outstanding material.
“Sweet Songs & Bitter Truth” is a collection of outstanding songs you should not miss if you’re a true folk, blues, and Americana fan. Nick Cody And The Heartache is a master in writing, composing, and delivering memorable, meaningful, powerful tunes where each lyric explores what makes us human, but also reminds us to revolt during the most troubling times. His musicianship is more than hearable through every chord progression, harmony, melody, theme, and any other articulation, perfectly emphasizing the meaning of his songs. If you’re looking for a collection of emotionally and sonically resonant folk songs where you’ll find some of the most beautiful lyrics and orchestrations, then you should put “Sweet Songs & Bitter Truth” on your music radar immediately.
