LHUMA - Springer/Self-Harm CS

LHUMA is a screamo/hardcore trio from Dresden, Germany, that is lurking around the DIY hardcore scene for a while. Since their beginnings, this interesting trio released a Self-Harm EP, which sold out in such a short period. Then LHUMA decided to record another set of songs that will become material for a Springer EP. The group planned to release this material between two short summer tours, but the plan never came to realization due to the situation with the pandemic. Luckily for all the fans of energetic screamo music, LHUMA decided to include both recordings on one tape and encapsulate the current discography in one place. Expect nothing but a furious performance by one of the best European screamo/hardcore groups in recent years.

Springer EP carries four thoroughly planned compositions that burst with chaos, melancholy, and dynamics. Judging by their performance, this material liberates enormous servings of raw energy, housed into short but effective compositions. The group avoids contemporary trends in screamo music, repetitiously utilized by some other groups in the past. For instance, LHUMA avoids the almost annoying involvements of modern metal or math-core but solely relies upon the mid to late nineties European hardcore sound. Still, the group involves some classic black metal/neo crust guitar melodies and occasional blastbeats during this material, but these maneuvers serve more as decorations. Perhaps the chaotic aesthetics are sometimes overwhelming the other orchestrations, but the group showcases how precision and rawness perfectly match altogether in so many cases.

Besides omnipresent melancholy, depressive melodies, and harmonies, LHUMA also pays a lot of attention to the arrangements and song structures. This material carries some cleverly arranged segments that are giving even more power to these compositions. The feral lead vocals are also contributing to the powerful performance of the group through relentless shouts, screams, and other vocal articulations. Therefore, the entire group operates and sounds like a charm without sounding repetitious and predictable. Springer EP perfectly matches the previous efforts of the group, but perhaps Self-Harm sounds a little more polished than a brand new material. However, these two recordings are aesthetically similar and could flawlessly operate together as a full-length album.

LHUMA perfectly understands the balance between chaos and order, harmony and dissonance, precision and imprecision. These recordings are the proof of their brilliance, and you’ll love both Springer EP and Self-Harm EP if you’re into cleverly arranged screamo/hardcore sound. The black cassette comes with an orange-colored O-card cover, decorated by a beautiful illustration. The inlay carries the lyrics and all the necessary information about the band. Springer EP/Self-Harm EP cassette is available for pre-order on the LHUMA’s Bandcamp page. Keep your eyes peeled on this one!
