Podge Lane – Down

Down” is the latest single by Podge Lane, an Irish singer-songwriter based in Cork. It’s his first piece of work in 2024, serving as an adequate follow-up to “Snow/Hailstone,” “Too Late,” and “Change In Weather,” three outstanding tracks released last year. Soundwise, Podge Lane incorporates many different but complementary elements to illustrate such rich and luxurious sonic imagery. Perhaps alt-country comes to mind first, but you’ll notice how some of the finest properties borrowed from alternative rock, garage rock, indie rock, indie folk, folk rock, and many more found their way into this sonic equation. He combines the singer-songwriter approach while writing, composing, arranging, recording, and producing everything, so “Down” unquestionably sounds fresh and unique. It’s also good to mention that Podge Lane used all these additional elements as more than necessary enhancements, uplifting his number on an entirely new level while remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, “Down” will suit even those picky listeners.

It’s nearly mindblowing how Podge Lane stacked all these sonic ingredients. His track levitates between dominant alt-country sound, but it also carries some of the best properties of the late sixties and early seventies garage rock. Still, there are also homages to late eighties alternative, nineties indie, and contemporary rock sound. He incorporated something for anyone, but it’s also good to mention that “Down” resonates with the ambiance that is uniquely his own. It’s one of those compositions that carries such a hypnotic, addictive, catchy aura, immediately drawing your attention and refusing to let go. The artist poured all the experience, knowledge, skills, talent, and ideas into it, and you’ll enjoy every moment spent with this song.

Of course, you’ll immediately hear Podge Lane’s commanding voice, guiding you through every section and skillfully balancing between low, mid, and high notes. These vocal harmonies resonate with sincerity, confidence, emotion, and power, emphasizing all the segments and instrumentations. The tastefully arranged, acoustic, and semi-distorted chord progressions and riffs act as a perfect backdrop, supporting all those marvelous vocal maneuvers, while the delicate piano leads, themes, melodies, and accentuations add a dosage of complexity over the top. The interplay between acoustic and electric guitars supplies layer upon layer of pleasant orchestrations, making “Down” such an enjoyable sonic ride. This track wouldn’t sound so powerful without a bass guitar. You’ll hear all those equally complex, vividly hearable, warm-sounding low-ends rumbling beneath all the mentioned layers, offering heaviness, depth, and clarity while the cleverly assembled beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics dictate groove and tempo with such precision and finesse. Podge Lane thought about everything while assembling this magnificent alt-country number, and it will undoubtedly become a staple on your favorite playlist. The single is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
