Yet No Yokai - Wir Sind Da LP - Hummus Records

It has been a while since we had any Hummus Records artists on our page. Thankfully, a batch of records arrived last week, and Wir Sind Da by Yet No Yokai immediately caught my eye. For those unfamiliar with this group, Yet No Yokai is a Swiss trio that explores many music genres, but their experimentations always result in a perfectly textured, complex, ethereal, multilayered sonic experience. Therefore, their primary style is not so easy to define. Perhaps krautrock comes to mind first, but you’ll unquestionably notice how some other complementary music genres found their way into this fine piece of sonic artistry. Yet No Yokai continuously flirts with the finest sonic ingredients borrowed from psychedelic rock, noise rock, art rock, experimental rock, garage rock, stoner, alternative, world music, electronic music, etc. The best part about all these additional elements is that Yet No Yokai uses them as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details, but sometimes they take over and become the primary sonic direction. Therefore, this band always sounds innovative, fresh, and unique, with each composition delivering an entirely different, but mindblowing listening experience.

This comprehensive collection of thoroughly arranged numbers is more than rock-solid proof of their brilliance. Wir Sind Da immediately grabs your attention with all its intricacies, complexities, wisely constructed song structures, irresistibly hypnotic segments, and other sonic delicacies and surprises. Yet No Yokai invested all their experience, knowledge, skills, creativity, talent, brilliant ideas, and jaw-dropping musicianship while writing, composing, recording, and producing their latest full-length album. Every song is an impressive amalgam of cleverly constructed orchestrations that has a particular theme as a centerpiece, while the remainder of the detailed leads, melodies, harmonies, chord progressions, riffs, and other sonic maneuvers gradually shape the colossal ambiance. The equally complex, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines offer more than necessary heaviness, depth, and clarity, while the outstanding drumming performance provides more than necessary groove and pace with magnificent beats, breaks, fills, odd time signatures, and other percussive acrobatics.

Still, that’s not all. Quite the contrary, The trio also thought about various electronic sequences, synths, and ambiances that come as a final layer over the top alongside the marvelous vocal performance. The lead vocalist guides the listeners during particular moments, but Yet No Yokai focus on their instrumentations as much as possible. You’ll get the impression that every next composition is even more progressive and complex, and you’ll not be far from the truth. These folks put a lot of time and ideas into their music, and their effort resulted in a marvelous full-length that will appeal to even the pickiest fans of krautrock music. You should definitely check it out as soon as possible because it will immediately become one of your favorite vinyl records in your collection. Speaking of records, Wir Sind Da comes on a green vinyl record housed in a high-quality jacket decorated with abstract artwork. It’s a sonic and visual treat that you must possess.
