Boston, Massachusetts punk and indie band Little Low have returned with their new single, “Underrated Heartache”.
“I wrote this song about the end of a friendship a few years back,” says the band’s vocalist Christine Atturio. “Originally written as an acoustic song in open C tuning, it was a little darker and sadder than the version we have now. Whenever I played it at acoustic shows and mentioned the topic of friendship breakups, there was always at least one person who would come up to me and say that they related to the strange difficulties of navigating the end of a close personal relationship when there were no romantic ties associated.”
The title comes from a Rupi Kaur poem that inspired the lyrics. The poem reflects on the quiet, gradual grief of losing a friendship and the lack of songs or books that speak to that experience. Little Low developed the track through several iterations, ultimately choosing a more pop-punk-oriented arrangement while keeping the original lyrics and structure. The song was recorded in February 2026 with Kyle Paradis at New Alliance in Somerville, Massachusetts.
With introspective lyrics, twinkly melodic guitars, and a heart-on-sleeve delivery, Little Low draw comparisons to emo pioneers such as The Get Up Kids, Hey Mercedes, and Jimmy Eat World. The band’s cathartic, hook-filled sound honors those influences while adding a distinct pop-punk character of its own.
The second pressing of Little Low’s ‘Sunshine Guilt’ LP is on pretty marbled Laguna Blue vinyl. Grab one now via Engineer Records while stocks last.
