When you sit down and think about it, constructing songs that will lyrically and musically resonate with the broader auditorium takes a lot of time and effort, often spanning weeks to months spent writing, composing, arranging, and producing. Many artists and bands describe this process as an emotionally and physically exhausting period, often filled with various tasks, obstacles, challenges, and other factors that cause big creative breaks after finishing those works. And while lyrics definitely have an aim to reach out to the crowd and make them revisit all those works, you can only imagine how difficult it is to create the same emotional state by just delivering instrumental music to the table. As many artist previously reported, that’s an entirely different beast to tame, with many of them going through thick and thin until they finish their recordings. Thankfully, there are artists who continuously deliver some of the finest works of instrumental rock music that the genre has seen in years, and Decadent Heroes, a project of Italian songwriter, musician, and producer Luigi Chiappini, is certainly one of them. With “Climax,” his latest full-length album released on May 18th, he delivers nine incredible compositions plus three alternative takes that will certainly indulge the listening apparatuses of even the pickiest music enthusiasts. For this particular endeavour, Luigi Chiappini has teamed up with a drummer, Dennis Holt, and a bass player, Fausto Berardo, while there are also many contributions from musicians such as Pino Saracini, Rich Gray, Marcin Palider, Darrell Nutt, and Francesco Coppola Bove. Sonically, “Climax” expands Decadent Heroes’ musical vocabulary by infusing some genres he explored in the past, but there are also plenty of new styles in this sonic equation. Perhaps instrumental rock comes to mind first, but do not be surprised if you stumble upon some of the finest properties borrowed from alternative, hard rock, classic rock, post-rock, progressive rock, etc. As soon as you press play, you’ll notice Luigi Chiappini’s profound love for eighties and nineties instrumental rock music, offering that sweet nostalgia to his listeners with such precision and finesse yet the qualities that meet all the trends in modern music production uplift every guitar solo, guitar riff, bassline, and drum beat on an entirely new level, making this material suitable not only for all those longtime instrumental rock fans but anyone who appreciates cleverly assembled and flawlessly performed music.
What makes “Climax” so captivating is the sheer amount of catchy, memorable, engaging themes that roam throughout every composition. These are details where you can vividly hear how much time, effort, heart, and soul Luigi Chiappini poured into this material. Whether you press play at the very beginning, the end, or somewhere in the middle of this album, there are some of the catchiest themes you’ll hear in instrumental rock waiting for you. As I said before, managing this music genre like this can be a difficult task to achieve, but when you have nine compositions, and you struggle while picking the best one due to the sheer quality of each one of them, well, that’s impressive to say the least. And it mostly has to do with the fact that Luigi Chiappini absolutely rocks on his instrument. His guitar playing goes beyond comprehension from start to finish. There is no room for dead notes, just an unfiltered guitar ringing through every theme, lead, melody, harmony, chord progression, riffs, and any other sonic maneuver that comes to your mind at the moment. The interplays between rhyhtm and lead guitars are also one of those details that you should pay attention to because the way leads harmoniously collide with riffs is one of the most impressive things you’ll notice while listening to this instrumental rock gem. It’s nearly mindblowing how all those layers articulate together without overwhelming each other, proving that Decadent Heroes thought about everything while writing, composing, arranging, and producing this marvelous material. Also, the way Luigi Chiappini balances all those jangly, angular, polished notes with tastefully distorted sonic maneuvers really gives this album a certain atmosphere and flow, rarely heard or seen on the contemporary music scene nowadays. Beneath all those lush guitar works, you’ll notice many incredibly constructed basslines, offering more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth while acting as a binding element between the mentioned instrumentations and rhyhtmic patterns. The excellent drumming, based upon tastefully arranged, flawlessly performed, well-accentuated, steady, moderate beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics keep everything in line while dictating groove and pace. Every instrument has its place and purpose, making “Climax” such an incredible piece of instrumental rock music.
Compositions like “The Dragon,” “Dawn Of Fire,” “Minutes Away,” “Hype,” “Pickup War,” and “Save Me Tomorrow” are definitive standouts, but you should listen to this material to its entirety mainly because it carries so many brilliant, beautiful, fascinating moments that will force you to revisit this marvelous album all over again. Luigi Chiappini’s Decadent Heroes achieved something instrumental rock acts rarely achieve, he brought emotion, melody, harmony, and innovation back into this longstanding music genre. His fresh and unique approach to the genre makes instrumental rock exciting and entertaining again, as it should be in 2026. Decadent Heroes’ unmatched creativity, talent, skills, knowledge, and experience are on full display here, and “Climax” is definitely one of the greatest instrumental albums you’ll hear in recent years. Do not miss it!
