Emerging from a 30-year hiatus, Philadelphia post-punk and goth pioneers Sri Lanka have released their long-awaited new album, Leviathan. Arriving alongside the third single, “Eventide,” the record reintroduces a band whose legacy has quietly endured in the underground since their formation in 1986.
Sri Lanka’s early momentum was derailed by the tragic death of founding frontman Brett Turner in 1989. After regrouping for releases in the early 90s, the band eventually splintered. However, they reemerged in 2020 to begin piecing together Leviathan, a cinematic and visceral body of work that features unrecorded re-workings of past songs alongside fresh material. “Eventide” perfectly captures their signature tension between light and darkness, bringing a remarkable full-circle moment to a band whose sound remains as urgent and relevant as ever.
