The Only Objects – Access Will Be Retained (feat. Jack Degenhart)

Access Will Be Retained (feat. Jack Degenhart)” is the latest track by The Only Objects, an outstanding Australian trio based in Adelaide. It’s their first piece of work this year, announcing the release of their forthcoming sophomore album, An Excess of Hauntings. Lyrically, this composition captures the voyage of blending personal and conceptual elements in their songwriting, and it explores topics of promised futures while spending lives surviving in various states of permanent crisis. Soundwise, The Only Objects combines many different but complementary styles to illustrate such fresh, unique, innovative, and versatile sounds. Perhaps alternative rock comes to mind, but you’ll unquestionably stumble upon some of the finest elements borrowed from post-punk, post-rock, art rock, experimental rock, art rock, jazz, and many more. These clever musicians use all these additional elements as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to uplift their sound to new heights while simultaneously remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, these experimentations with many different but complementary music genres resulted in a catchy, memorable, engaging, unique composition that will unquestionably appeal to even the pickiest music enthusiasts.

As soon as you press play, you’ll notice that The Only Objects are not joking around with their sound. They gradually transcend from calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuvers to ultimately complex, technically demanding instrumentations, experimentations, and other sonic delicacies. “Access Will Be Retained” arrives with cleverly assembled structure, garnered with intricate segments, brilliant ideas, and marvelous orchestrations. Each instrument has its place and purpose in this sonic equation, making this number such a pleasant listening experience worth repeating over and over. It’s nearly mindblowing how they begin with soothing post-punk and post-rock instrumentations, then switch to more art and experimental rock moments, and then suddenly transition into progressive, jazzy improvisations. Each section demonstrates their dedication to the craft, proving that they thought about even the tiniest details and nuances while writing, composing, arranging, and producing this track.

The interplay between various synth layers shapes an adequate backdrop for the vocal performance. You’ll notice how the themes, melodies, harmonies, and other maneuvers lurk on one side while the powerful chord progressions resonate on the other. The interaction between these layers immediately grabs you by the collar and refuses to let go long after the song ends. Of course, there’s Jack Degenhart’s brilliant saxophone performance, notable in all segments of the song, but mostly dominant during those jazzy parts. His marvelous virtuosities will blow you away. In the meantime, the equally intricate, vividly hearable low-ends rumble beneath the synths, offering more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth while binding everything together. The drumming goes beyond comprehension so many times throughout the entire track. You’ll stumble upon the comprehensive collection of various beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics, performed in regular and odd-time signatures. These rhythmic patterns keep the remainder of the orchestrations in line while dictating groove and tempo. Of course, this composition wouldn’t be complete without the outstanding vocal performance, executed with precision and finesse. The band not only thought about the lead vocal arrangements, but about back vocals and singalongs as well. You’ll notice how these vocal harmonies command attention and guide the listening apparatus from scratch to finish, while the cleverly implemented back vocals and singalongs enhance particular segments. The impressive vocal range seamlessly balances low, mid, and high notes, emphasizing everything these skilled musicians tried to achieve with their music. As you can see, The Only Objects thought about everything while writing, composing, and recording their latest single, so a pleasant listening experience is more than guaranteed.

The Only Objects is a one-of-a-kind trio that delivers otherwordly music, suitable not only for experimental rock fans, but for anyone even remotely into progressive, innovative, cleverly assembled, and flawlessly performed music. “Access Will Be Retained” is a masterpiece, a composition that vividly showcases their brilliance, experience, knowledge, skills, and talent. It’s a multidimensional listening experience, assembled by stacking wisely and tastefully composed sonic layers that will immediately grab your attention. You should immediately place this composition on your radar. “Access Will Be Retained” is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
