Once again, we’re going back in time to revisit a classic of the regional indie scene. It has been a while since we wrote a review for “22,” a second album by the Croatian indie trio Seine, and now it’s time to write something more, five years after the initial review. However, this time we’re armed with a vinyl version, so we’re eager to hear what differences this format brings to the table compared to a compact disc. For those who might not know, this full-length was released by Moonlee Records in 2019, and it consists of seven excellent tracks. Some purists could argue if this is a 12″ EP or an LP, but we’ll leave that debate to them, as we’re primarily focused on music here.
This material represented a significant progression compared to its predecessor, “Sno Sna.” It carries more wisely constructed compositions decorated with intricate instrumentations and brilliant ideas. While their indie core may remain intact, they upgraded their sound by incorporating even more music styles than in their previous material. Some hints are pointing out that Seine is profoundly interested in alternative, post-hardcore, avant-rock, post-punk, post-rock, noise rock, psych-rock, etc. There are some milder genres involved, like trip-hop, indie-pop, and minimal, signifying that these folks are music enthusiasts who love writing, composing, arranging, and producing engaging, memorable, and catchy music. These qualities unquestionably shine brighter on vinyl than on compact disc. Although both vinyl and CD sound almost equally good, it seems like the CD lacked that low-end punch, a detail many modern releases lack nowadays. Thankfully, vinyl showcases all the qualities of this excellent band by bringing those low-end and rhymic details and nuances upfront.
Sonically, Seine sounds superb. Their fresh, unique, innovative approach to so many music genres makes them one of the standouts on the regional indie scene. The vocals are the centerpiece of this sonic equation, emphasizing all the intricate segments and instrumentations to the max. The outstanding vocal range balances low, mid, and high notes with such ease while simultaneously commanding attention and leading the listener on this epic sonic voyage. In the meantime, the guitar interplay builds a colossal wall of sound or calms things down to the point of sheer minimalism, depending on the moment, mood, or ambiance. All the themes, melodies, harmonies, chord progressions, riffs, accentuations, and other sonic maneuvers transcend from the calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal moments to profoundly raw, abrasive, heavy, powerful crescendos. The occasional additional synth involvement spices things up even more, adding a touch of psychedelia to an already complex atmosphere.
The importance of the rhythm section cannot be underestimated here. Just like the remainder of the orchestrations, the bass guitar and drums deliver premium instrumentations that define the backbone of the entire album, ensuring that even those calm moments have rhythmic support to hold onto. The comprehensive collection of cleverly assembled low-ends immensely supports guitars and synths by providing heaviness, clarity, and depth, while intricate drumming patterns comprised of moderate and energetic beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics dictate groove and tempo. Every member plays a significant role in this sonic equation, ensuring that “22” appeals to everyone. There are no doubts that this material was one of the highlights back in 2019, as Seine left no stone unturned while writing, composing, arranging, recording, and producing this indie gem. You should check it out as soon as possible because you won’t be disappointed. Head to the Seine’s Bandcamp page or Moonlee Records for more information about ordering.
