King In Yellow – Spirit Shift

Spirit Shift” is a debut single by King In Yellow, a Kingston, New York-based post-punk group. It’s a tremendous composition that showcases all the creativity, talent, ideas, and musicianship of the entire band. Still, there is more than meets the eye. Perhaps King In Yellow explore the fundamentals of post-punk sound, but you’ll notice how some other complementary music genres found their way into this fine piece of sonic artistry. Don’t be surprised if you stumble upon vital elements of classic punk rock, noise rock, art punk, new wave, alternative, etc. These additional sonic ingredients undoubtedly serve as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details that uplift this song on an entirely new level, while the group remains loyal to the primary sonic direction. Of course, these experimentations with different styles resulted in a powerful track that will appeal to even the pickiest post-punk fans.

As soon as you press play, you’ll notice how every band member plays a significant role in shaping such a colossal ambiance based on a cleverly assembled melodies, harmonies, themes, chord progressions, and riffs. The lead guitar delivers hypnotic themes, leads, and arpeggiated chord progressions, while the rhythm guitar bursts with impressive, intricate riffs. Both guitars also carry generous servings of reverb, making these sonic maneuvers even more colossal. Of course, this song wouldn’t sound so good without equally detailed, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines that offer more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth. The outstanding drumming built upon energetic, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics provides groove and pace, but also keeps the remainder of the instrumentations in line. Still, the versatile lead vocal performance steals the show here. The balance between clean singing techniques, shoutouts, and chaotic screams makes “Spirit Shift” even more interesting, and you’ll notice how these vocal maneuvers emphasize everything the remainder of the band tried to achieve with this song.

King In Yellow thoroughly planned the song structure, so “Spirit Shift” carries many impressive ideas and orchestrations in every segment. It seems like every section sounds even more complex than the previous one, drawing the listener even deeper into the intricacies of the song. The band undoubtedly showcase all their potential right from the start, and “Spirit Shift” will suit die-hard fans of the genre, but also gather some new ones who’re not even remotely interested in post-punk sound. The single is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
