King In Yellow – Your Religion

Hudson river valley post-punkers King In Yellow return with another fine piece of sonic artistry. This time, they offer “Your Religion,” a marvelous track serving as an appropriate continuation of “Modern Dance,” The Chelsea At Night,” “Lightning Returning,” and “Spirit Shift,” excellent singles released throughout this and last year. Soundwise, the song leans much more straightforward punk rock and hardcore punk sound, but you’ll notice those recognizable King In Yellow signature moves lurking around in every segment. Honestly, King In Yellow’s music always sounds fresh and unique, resonating with everything you ever needed from a post-punk band, but they also have that incredible ability to surprise with particular ideas, sonic maneuvers, or some tiny nuances and details. That’s the case with “Your Religion,” an exceptional song that will immediately become a staple on your post-punk playlist.

Compared to their previous works, this song unquestionably stands out in groove and dynamics, adding that omnipresent hardcore and punk rock feel. The drummer dictates groove and pace with tastefully arranged, flawlessly performed, well-accentuated rhythmic sequences, propelling this number and keeping the remainder of the orchestrations in line. His performance acts as a foundation for everything the remainder of the band tried to achieve with this song. Not so dominant as in their previous tracks, but still equally important, the bass guitar roars beneath guitars, serving a dosage of robust, heavy, subtly distorted low-end notes. This particular instrument plays the same significant role as drums, offering a rock-solid, massive foundation for excellent guitar maneuvers.

The guitars steal the show here. The interplay between rhythm and lead guitar is vividly hearable from beginning to end, providing an adequate backdrop for all the vocal articulations. You’ll notice how heavily distorted chord progressions and riffs scream on one side while the leads, themes, melodies, and harmonies shine on the other. These dualities between guitars sound magnificent, and you’ll solely enjoy their experimentations if you’re a true post-punk fan. Also, it’s good to mention that these instrumentations resonate with rawness, abrasiveness, and fuzziness, bringing more than necessary dirtiness and aggression to this number. The excellent vocal performance is also responsible for the mentioned touch of aggression by delivering well-articulated shouts that marvelously suit all the instrumentations. The vocalist guides and retains attention of the listener through every segment but also emphasizes all the sonic and rhythmic acrobatics with his performance.

“Your Religion” showcases evolution in the King In Yellow’s sound. Besides all the fundamental elements of post-punk music, the band also included some straightforward punk rock and hardcore elements, further decorating their already rich and luxurious sound. These folks deserve your attention because “Your Religion” offers something more than just plain old post-punk music. King In Yellow sounds innovative, unpredictable, and creative to the max, and this song exemplifies their commitment to the craft. The single is available on all streaming services. Don’t miss it!
