King In Yellow – Modern Dance

“Modern Dance” is the latest single by King In Yellow, a Hudson river valley post-punkers. It is their second track in 2024, arriving as a perfect follow-up to “The Chelsea, At Night,” another excellent single released this year. The band also released “Lightning Returning” and “Spirit Shift,” two equally good songs that deserve your attention as well. For those who missed our previous writings about these profoundly creative musicians, King In Yellow nurtures a unique post-punk sound by combining modern and retro elements of the genre. Still, that’s not all. Quite the contrary, they also incorporate additional elements borrowed from so many different but complementary music genres like goth rock, grunge, alternative, new wave, indie rock, etc. “Modern Dance” even carries some sonic ingredients usually heard in tracks delivered by post-hardcore groups, so these qualities undoubtedly enhance this song on an entirely new level.

As usual, King In Yellow don’t joke around with their music. You’ll immediately notice how the cleverly assembled interplay between lead and rhythm guitar shapes the calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal atmosphere. Once again, they thoroughly planned all the themes, melodies, and harmonies, which mingle with tastefully distorted riffs, and chord progressions. These guitar dualities act as a perfect backdrop for the outstanding vocal performance that immediately draws you into the King In Yellow’s post-punk universe. It’s also good to mention that the lead vocalist skillfully handles each segment by delivering lyrics as intricate as music support. The vocals and guitar suit each other flawlessly, and they’re solely responsible for such a mesmerizing atmosphere.

Of course, that doesn’t mean King In Yellow forgot about the rhythm section. The detailed low-ends contribute more depth, clarity, and heaviness to this sonic equation, but also glue guitars and drums together. The importance of this instrument is vividly hearable from scratch to finish, as the bassist delivers some of the best basslines you’ll hear on the modern post-punk scene. This track wouldn’t sound this good without the marvelous drumming performance. The drummer keeps the remainder of the band in line, dictates groove and tempo, and highlights all the segments with outstanding, moderate, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics. Like the remainder of the band, his presence is notable from beginning to end, commanding and decorating this sonic machinery like a pro.

“Modern Dance” is such a great introductory piece to King In Yellow’s rich and luxurious universe. These folks always deliver top-notch tracks where the fundamentals of the genre meet some innovative approaches and elements borrowed from other complementary genres. That’s the case with “Modern Dance,” a song that bends all the rules, but still sounds like the best post-punk song you ever heard.
