Lizzie Esau – Roadkill

Roadkill” is a new single by Lizzie Esau, a Newcastle-Upon-Tyne based singer-songwriter. It’s the second single from her latest EP, “Deepest Blue,” released earlier this year. Lyrically, “Roadkill” talks about being used and manipulated in a relationship. However, it is also an empowering song that encourages people in the same situation to overcome the obstacles and move on. It’s a reflective, contemplative, meaningful, and relatable composition and will immediately resonate with the broader auditorium. Lizzie Esau combines the singer-songwriter approach with some of the finest properties borrowed from many complementary music genres. Perhaps the alternative comes to mind first, but you’ll unquestionably hear how elements of modern rock, indie rock, and indie pop found their way into this fine piece of sonic artistry. These additional elements serve as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details that undoubtedly uplift this song on an entirely new level, while Esau remains loyal to the alternative sound. Therefore, these experimentations with various styles resulted in a mesmerizing song that will appeal to even the pickiest fans of the genre.

Lizzie Esau thought about everything while assembling this number. Besides poetic storytelling lyricism, you’ll notice how her outstanding vocal performance serves as a centerpiece, emphasizing all the instrumentation. Her vocal harmonies skillfully balance between low, mid, and high notes, while cleverly arranged melodies, chord progressions, and riffs serve as a perfect backdrop for her vocal maneuvers. The generous servings of studio reverb give more calm, soothing, ethereal vibes, creating almost a shoegaze, dream pop, or post-rock atmosphere. You’ll notice how layers of instrumentation become even more complex as the song progresses, and Esau’s writing, composing, recording, and producing skills shine here. Of course, this song wouldn’t sound complete without intricate, vividly hearable, warm-sounding low-end notes that offer more heaviness, clarity, and depth. The outstanding drumming performance based upon downtempo, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics define groove and pace but also keep the remainder of instrumentations in line.

Lizzie Esau flawlessly assembled the entire structure, so every segment arrives with many pleasant sonic delicacies and surprises. All these instrumentations define a mesmerizing soundscape that supports her meaningful lyricism. She thought about even the tiniest details while writing and composing “Roadkill.” You’ll hear every note and beat thanks to the sound quality that meets all the criteria of contemporary music production. “Roadkill” is one of the songs you should definitely put on your radar as soon as possible. It’s surely one of the best modern alternative rock track you’ll hear this year. The single is available on all streaming platforms.
