“huracán” is a new single by Outerloop, a Washington-based post-punk quartet. It’s their first single this year and the perfect follow-up to their self-titled debut album, EP 01, and a standalone single called Just Behave, all released in 2022. Led by exceptional vocalist Taisha Estrada and guitarist extraordinaire Don Potter, Outerloop delivers premium post-punk music that continuously levitates between modern and retro sounds. Still, you’ll notice how some other complementary music genres found their way into this fine piece of sonic artistry. Besides almost solely relying upon the fundamentals of post-punk music, Outerloop also incorporates elements borrowed from goth rock, garage rock, hard rock, post-hardcore, alternative, etc. These experimentations with different styles resulted in a catchy and powerful track that will suit all post-punk fans and beyond.
Right with the initial notes and beats, you’ll notice that Outerloop don’t joke around with their sound. The band cleverly constructed the entire song to satisfy even the pickiest listeners. Every segment delivers brilliant ideas distilled into impressive vocal and orchestral maneuvers. Of course, Taisha Estrada’s charismatic, sincere, confident vocal performance is the centerpiece, and her perfect balance between low, mid, and high notes skillfully emphasizes all the instrumentations. The cleverly assembled, catchy themes, leads, chord progressions, and riffs serve as a perfect backdrop for her vocal maneuvers, while the generous servings of reverb give more ethereal vibes to the song. In the meantime, the equally complex, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines offer more than necessary heaviness, depth, and clarity, while the energetic drumming performance provides groove and pace through well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics.
Outerloop thought about even the tiniest details while assembling this track, and their time and effort resulted in a powerful post-punk composition that carries all the vital qualities of the genre. Their ability to push the boundaries while still paying homage to all the aesthetics of the genre makes them a standouts on the post-punk scene. It’s also nearly mindblowing how many impressive ideas and instrumentation they implemented into a singular composition, making “huracán” a profoundly complex song that is truly representative of their sound and a great addition to their discography. “huracán” will unquestionably appeal to all the die-hard post-punk fans, but it will also appeal to those who’re stumbling upon this longevous genre for the first time. The single is available on all streaming services. Don’t miss it.
