MAIIJA – I Am LP (Noise Appeal Records)

MAIIJA‘s long-awaited return with her latest album, “I Am,” marks a significant moment in her musical journey. Thirteen years after her debut, “Obituary for a Lost Mind,” and ten years after her sophomore release, “From Ice to Water to Nothing,” the artist has crafted a collection of eleven songs that showcase her growth and evolution as a musician. Collaborating with producer Peter Paul Aufreiter of Hearts Hearts fame, MAIIJA has assembled a group of talented musicians from Vienna to bring her vision to life. Together, they explore the fundamental elements of indie-pop music while incorporating elements from other genres like indie, psych-pop, and post-rock. These additional influences serve as enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details enriching the album’s sonic landscape without overshadowing Maiija’s distinct artistic direction.

At the core of “I Am” lies MAIIJA’s exceptional vocal performance. Her voice is powerful and emotive, effortlessly navigating a range of emotions throughout the album. From the opening track to the closing notes, MAIIJA’s sincerity shines through, creating an intimate connection with the listener. Her ability to seamlessly balance low, mid, and high notes showcases her vocal versatility and adds depth to the compositions. Also, the instrumental arrangements on “I Am” are equally captivating. The guitars and keys create a mesmerizing ambiance, intertwining with MAIIJA’s vocals to form a cohesive and immersive sonic experience. The songs are built on clean chord progressions, melodies, and harmonies, which allow Maiija’s voice to take center stage while providing a solid foundation for the music.

“I Am” also showcases MAIIJA’s attention to detail and the time and effort invested in its creation. The complex low-end notes add depth and clarity to the instrumentations, creating a sense of heaviness that complements the ethereal qualities of the music. Additionally, MAIIJA seamlessly transitions between acoustic drumming performances, percussions, and electronic rhythmic sequences, adapting the instrumentation to suit each song’s unique mood and atmosphere. “I Am” is a testament to MAIIJA’s experience, creativity, talent, and musicianship. With each track, she invites listeners into her world, offering a glimpse into her thoughts and emotions. The album encompasses a range of themes, from self-reflection and personal growth to love and loss, allowing listeners to connect with the music on a deeply emotional level.

It is an exceptional album that will undoubtedly please indie-pop fans and music enthusiasts alike. MAIIJA’s commitment to crafting a well-rounded and carefully arranged collection of songs is evident in every aspect of the album. Her powerful and emotive vocals, supported by a diverse range of instrumental arrangements, create an unforgettable listening experience. “I Am” is a triumphant return for MAIIJA, showcasing her growth, evolution, and unwavering dedication to her craft.
