The Oldman Sound – Fair-weather EP

In the ever-evolving music scene, where artists and bands often lean toward modern, genre-pushing music that can feel overwhelming, many music outlets forget to incorporate the elements that made particular styles great in the first place. It seems like too much experimentation is ruining good music, and it’s no wonder many listeners rely on older recordings where songs were honest, soulful, emotional, meaningful, and more organic. Thankfully, there are still bands who infuse a subtle touch of nostalgia into their compositions, evoking those eras when marvelous music ruled the airwaves. The Oldman Sound is unquestionably one of those music outlets whose songs resonate with tremendous power yet carry generous servings of harmony, melody, profound lyrics, and ambiance that, once you hit the play button, immediately transport you to a completely different universe. With “Fair-weather,” their latest recording released today on all streaming platforms, they deliver three exceptional compositions that will immediately appeal to even the pickiest music enthusiasts, thanks to the brilliant ideas, outstanding musicianship, and top-notch music production. Lyrically, The Oldman Sound explores various sentiments, moods, situations, and circumstances, making this extended play highly relatable material that will resonate with the broader audience. Sonically, perhaps power pop comes to mind first, as The Oldman Sound incorporates all those fundamental elements of this longstanding music genre in each song, but do not be surprised if you stumble upon some of the finest properties borrowed from many different yet complementary styles. If you pay close attention, you’ll notice how some of the finest properties borrowed from dream pop, psychedelic pop rock, classic rock, indie rock, indie folk, and alternative found their way into this sonic equation. All these additions are so perfectly threaded into these songs, and they articulate so beautifully, creating a luxuriant soundscape that immediately wraps around your listening apparatus and refuses to let go long after the last notes and beats end. It’s a wonderful extended play that will immediately become a staple on your playlists.

This epic sonic journey commences with the title track, such a captivating composition that immediately demonstrates what you might expect from the remainder of the songs. The Oldman Sound skillfully combines power pop, psych pop, and indie folk, but you may also hear subtle rock elements that provide more groove and power. The group relies upon lush vocal harmonies that deliver additional melody over reverby, intricate, tastefully distorted guitar interplay. You’ll notice how all those chord progressions, harmonies, melodies, and themes delivered on both acoustic and electric guitars articulate throughout the entire composition, creating a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine. It’s nearly mind-blowing how all those layers articulate without overwhelming each other, proving that The Oldman Sound thought about everything while writing, composing, arranging, and producing this fine piece of sonic artistry. The soulful, passionate, confident, powerful vocal harmonies open up “Dead Strings,” another fine blend of calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal indie folk and power pop, often leaning into psychedelic pop and indie rock. Those vocal harmonies expertly balance low, mid, and high notes with precision and finesse, elevating, accentuating, and decorating all those orchestrations delivered on synths and guitars. The Oldman Sound offers another elegant, luxuriant, and beautiful interplay between psychedelic synth leads and themes, acoustic chord progressions, and more electric sonic maneuvers, all while the intricate, warm-sounding basslines and moderate beats keep everything together. The rhythm section becomes more complex on “Tame (A Saint’s Life),” a composition that not only closes this epic sonic journey but also exemplifies how even the longstanding genres like power pop, dream pop, psych pop, indie folk, and indie rock can still sound fresh, unique, innovative, and exciting. You’ll notice how rhyhtmic patterns in this composition are more detailed, accentuated, danceable, and cheerful, complementing the remainder of the instrumentation so perfectly. In the meantime, the intricate, warm-sounding basslines contribute warmth, depth, clarity, groove, and an additional melody to the song, while the interplay between guitars, keys, and string section expands ambiance on an entirely new level. Together, they not only construct ethereal and otherworldly ambiance but also help the vocals to shine in the limelight even more. It’s one of those compositions that convinces you to spin this material over and over again, and The Oldman Sound wisely put this gem at the end.

“Fair-weather” is a power pop/indie folk masterpiece crafted by two exceptional musicians who know how to assemble perfect, catchy, memorable, engaging, captivating songs. Their songwriting and composing abilites are on full display; brilliant ideas, outstanding musicianship, and high-quality production elevate the listening experience to new heights; and each composition carries so many beautiful moments that you’ll gladly spin this outstanding release repeatedly. If you love your music soulful, passionate, emotional, melodic, harmonious, meaningful, and profound, you should immediately place “Fair-weather” on your music radar. Do not miss this gem!
