Spearside – Not Up To Much

After critically acclaimed singles like Bus Stop and Crack In Your Brain, Irish trio Spearside return with another excellent composition that will unquestionably appeal to all the fans of a garage rock sound. Maybe it’s their third single since their inception on the scene, but Spearside burst with outstanding quality that some bands don’t possess even after dozen of full-length albums. As soon as you start listening to Not Up To Much, you’ll notice these folks aren’t joking around with their music. The band shines bright with impressive ideas, exceptional musicianship, and loads of experience. Spearside took garage rock as a starting point, but many styles lurk around in the mix. You’ll notice some of the finest properties of indie, power pop, punk rock, and alternative.

These complementary music genres play a significant role in shaping such an ear-appealing ambiance. You’ll hear how the raw, abrasive, fuzzy distortion pervades that ear-appealing ambiance, but Spearside thought about it, so this single continuously levitates between pleasant tones and delicate aggression. There are semi-distorted, arpeggiated chord progressions on one side and dirty riffs on the other, so each guitar channel shapes the incredible sound of Spearside. Of course, that doesn’t mean that the remainder of the group isn’t equally important. Quite the contrary, this composition wouldn’t sound so massive and powerful without profoundly complex basslines or dynamic without enormously energetic rhythmic sequences, empowered with many accentuations, enhancements, fills, and other percussive acrobatics that define all the best indie songs. Spearside is one of those bands you undoubtedly need to check out to comprehend their brilliance. Not Up To Much is available on all streaming platforms.
