Future Nots is the sonic equivalent of flipping your desk at work and telling your boss to kick rocks. Formed in early 2025 by Ian O’Leary (Squint, Dragd), Danny Blaies (Brother Lee), Stephen Inman (Blight Future) and Emma Tiemann (Murder by Death), Future Nots has made it hard to deny their mix of melody and grit. What happens when Fidlar meets The Hives while Culture Abuse and Pup eavesdrop? Future Nots, brothers and sisters.
Spite, Future Nots first EP (out October 30), is noisy, urgent, and unmistakably catchy. Varying in song structures, from traditionally predictable to deliberately scatterbrained, Future Nots enlists melody at any given moment, often never repeated, to keep the listener engaged and interested.
Lyrically, the EP is self-deprecating and shamefully self-aware. It’s about coming to terms with one’s negativity and pessimism and generally embracing spite as an immutable defect that can cultivate change and creativity. Hollered to the backdrop of juxtaposed instrumentals, which jump between shimmering cleans and fuzzy riffs, Future Nots is sure to plant some earworms whether welcomed or not.
“It’s like repeatedly banging your head against a wall during a four-hour work meeting you never asked to be a part of,” says the band.
