The Somnambulist release “September Shoals,” the first single from a new EP due in early 2027. The track marks the band’s first new material since their 2022 album Some More Songs Lost in Themselves.
The first of three singles leading into the EP, “September Shoals” opens a new chapter while reconnecting with the jazz-inflected textures of the band’s earlier work. The track features Luc Van Lieshout of Tuxedomoon on trumpet, alongside pianist Marius Moritz, who previously appeared on 2020’s Hypermnesiac, and Berlin-based double bassist Sofia Eftychidou.
The song looks back to the jazz-inflected Sophia Verloren (2012) while moving the band’s sound forward. Its lyrics explore the ambiguity of selfless love, and the possibility that sometimes the most generous act is to remain silent, allowing someone to leave without carrying the weight of knowing.
The accompanying video, directed and shot by singer Marco Bianciardi, turns this idea into a reversed myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Shot entirely from a first-person perspective in a single continuous take using VR180, it follows Orpheus chasing Eurydice, only for her to move too far forward to be followed.
Elisa Bartoli, a Siena-based professional dancer and actor, appears in the video. She describes the shoot as “a secret experience, a melancholic memory of summer’s end,” recalling a barefoot journey through an abandoned landscape, chasing light and timing as the boundary between performance and reality seemed to disappear.
