Jet Black Berries’ Space-Western Debut Restored By Propeller Sound

Propeller Sound Recordings reissues Jet Black Berries‘ Sundown on Venus [Definitive Edition], restoring the 1985 space-western cowpunk classic.

Propeller Sound Recordings has announced Sundown on Venus [Definitive Edition], a reissue of the 1985 debut from Rochester, NY’s Jet Black Berries. Formed out of post-punk band New Math, the group forged a singular space-western sound fusing cowpunk, psych-punk, rockabilly, and William S. Burroughs-inspired sci-fi dread.

Recorded in 1984, the album drew inspiration from Gram Parsons, The Rolling Stones, and The Gun Club, yielding dark anthems like “Bad Hombre” and “Masked Astronaut.” However, the original 1985 Enigma release was compromised when the label forced non-album tracks into the main sequence. This new definitive edition restores the album’s original tracklist and conceptual narrative arc.

Following their inclusion on The Return of the Living Dead soundtrack, Jet Black Berries built a cult reputation before disbanding. Sundown on Venus [Definitive Edition] finally gives this underrated gem the clarity and context it always deserved. Available now via Propeller Sound Recordings.
