Twenty-five years after helping define a generation of melodic pop-punk with Perhaps, I Suppose…, Southern California’s Rufio are officially back with “Maps,” the band’s first brand-new song in 16 years and the lead single from their upcoming EP, From The Outside, due August 7 via Double Helix Records and its sister label, Double Felix Records.
A band long celebrated for combining soaring melodies with dazzling technical musicianship, Rufio aren’t simply revisiting the past. “Maps” finds longtime members Scott Sellers (vocals/guitar), Clark Domae (guitar/vocals), and Taylor Albaugh (bass/vocals) writing from the perspective of adulthood, bringing the same melodic urgency that made the band a staple of the early-2000s punk scene while embracing the experiences that have shaped them over the last decade and a half.
“‘Maps’ is a mix between young Rufio and where we’re at now,” says Sellers. “The song is about a rekindled connection after 20 years of silence. We’ve grown a lot as musicians and humans, and I think the EP shows that through more confident playing, attention to detail, and realistic lyrics.”
The release of “Maps” follows Rufio’s recently re-recorded version of fan favorite “Dipshit,” issued earlier this year to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the band’s landmark debut album Perhaps, I Suppose…. While that release honored the band’s past, “Maps” points firmly toward its future, offering listeners their first glimpse of an entirely new chapter.
Produced by Rufio, From The Outside marks the band’s first collection of new material since 2010’s Anybody Out There. Written remotely by Sellers, Domae, and Albaugh, the five-song EP reflects years of growth, exploring themes of family, loss, anxiety, reconciliation, and resilience with a level of honesty and maturity that could only come from experience.
Rather than attempting to recreate the sound of their early twenties, Rufio embraced the freedom of writing without expectations.
“This EP was something fun to do with the dudes,” Sellers says. “We just wanted to make something that we are proud of and had fun doing. I’m at a weird point where I don’t really care what anyone else thinks right now. For me it was all about making something with the guys. We are old as hell now, so it’s not often we get to hang. So just being a bit more involved in each other’s lives felt really fucking good for me.”
For guitarist Clark Domae, that freedom became one of the project’s greatest strengths.
“For the first time, there was no pressure to write a ‘hit’ and there was no pressure of trying to write according to the direction of the scene—not that it ever mattered to us.”
From The Outside also marks several milestones for the band. It introduces Dylan Roy (Dragged Under, ONI, Skylimit) on drums and is Rufio’s first release through Double Helix Records and Double Felix Records. The EP was mixed by JUNO Award-winning producer Sam Guaiana (Silverstein, Bayside, Neck Deep) and mastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer Jason Livermore (Rise Against, NOFX, Descendents, Hot Water Music) at The Blasting Room.
More than 25 years after Perhaps, I Suppose… first established Rufio as one of melodic punk’s most respected bands, “Maps” proves the trio still has something meaningful to say. Familiar enough to remind listeners why they fell in love with Rufio in the first place yet confident enough to chart new territory, the single serves as both a reunion and a fresh beginning.
From The Outside arrives August 7, 2026.
