RxGhost Introduce New Lineup; New Single “Subway” Out June 26th

Kansas City’s RxGhost return on June 26 with “Subway,” the latest single from their forthcoming album Upkeep, due this fall on vinyl and cassette. Known for what they call “danger pop“—hook-driven songs wrapped in shoegaze atmosphere, alt-rock noise, and post-punk tension—the band continues to push their sound forward on the new track, which also marks the first RxGhost studio recording to feature guitarist Jen Kean.

Built on swirling guitars, driving bass lines, and a slow-burning sense of tension, “Subway” showcases the chemistry of the band’s current lineup. Bassist Chris Smead and drummer Justin Brooks provide a steady foundation while layers of guitar drift and expand overhead, with Kean’s atmospheric lead work adding a new dimension to the band’s already immersive sound.

Lyrically, “Subway” takes aim at manufactured fear and the culture of scapegoating. The song examines how people with little firsthand experience of city life are often convinced urban spaces are dangerous through media-driven narratives, creating enemies where none exist.

“You try to act so brave / but you’re afraid of the subway,” sings the band in the chorus, calling out those who project strength while operating from fear. The refrain “another strawman to blame” captures the song’s critique of misinformation, fearmongering, and the search for convenient targets in place of real solutions.

“Subway” is also the first released song from the second chapter of Upkeep. The album came together over roughly two years and across two different lineups. Early sessions with former guitarist Jeremiah James produced the previously released singles “Sponsored Content,” “Anytime But Now,” and “Undersaid,” all of which will appear on the finished album. After James stepped away to focus on his primary band, Redder Moon, RxGhost continued writing and recording with Kean, ultimately completing a full-length that bridges both eras while maintaining a cohesive identity.

Kean joined the band after years of crossing paths in the Kansas City music scene through her former post-rock outfit Still Ill. Having already spent more than a year performing with RxGhost, “Subway” serves as the first studio document of the lineup that has become a fixture on local stages. Her lead playing floats through the song’s haze rather than cutting through it, complementing the band’s established songwriting approach while subtly expanding its possibilities.

The current lineup of RxGhost features Josh Thomas (vocals, guitar), Jen Kean (guitar, vocals), Chris Smead (bass), and Justin Brooks (drums).

Since emerging from Kansas City’s thriving underground scene, RxGhost have earned a reputation for crafting emotionally resonant songs that balance melody, atmosphere, and noise. The band has shared stages with Shiner, Cloud Nothings, and The Veldt, while their debut album Scaffolding was named one of KMUW’s Best Local and Regional Releases of 2024.

Critical praise has followed. Too Much Rock described the band’s music as “both heady and heartfelt,” while Post-Punk.com praised their “shimmering rhythm section” and layered guitar work that recalls both The Cure and Deerhunter. Stargazer Music Magazine called their work “a masterclass in tension and release,” while Bridge 909 highlighted the band’s ability to package post-rock influences into songs that remain immediate and accessible.

With Upkeep, RxGhost continue to refine the sound they have been building toward since their inception—equal parts melody and dissonance, beauty and unease, familiarity and experimentation.
