Pressure Set have announced their debut single, “Blood Gimmick,” the first taste of their forthcoming self-titled album, due out later this year on Dr. Strange Records.
Formed from a chance encounter at Fest 22 in Gainesville, Florida, in October 2024, Pressure Set brings together Daryl Wilson (The Bollweevils), Dom Brining (Bear Away), Rob Burleson (SPELLS), and Simon Lamb (Methadones, Sludgeworth) — a collective of seasoned veterans from the punk underground united by a mutual love of Rocket From The Crypt, Hot Snakes, and the broader Swami Records universe.
Pressure Set began when Brining sent Burleson a batch of demos. Within a week, the first recordings were underway. Those early tracks were then passed to Wilson, who returned a rough vocal take within hours — then another, then a third. After that it was official: “I think we are a band,” Wilson declared. Fellow Chicago musician and close friend Simon Lamb would soon complete the lineup.
The band came together quickly and organically. “It started as a way to exercise our creative muscles remotely,” explains Burleson. “After a few phone recordings and some crude mixing in GarageBand, the songs began taking on a life of their own. It was a completely different way to process music.
Normally you’re in the same room together, and you can feel when a part rocks… or sucks. Writing a part to a song you’re hearing through headphones, then coming back a day later and asking yourself if it was actually any good — that’s a whole other process. You have to be ultra-critical of your own playing and really serve the song. Once Daryl put vocals over these tracks, we knew we’d made the right calls.”
On “Blood Gimmick,” vocalist Daryl Wilson gets to the point: “We all have this tendency to go through the motions. Checking boxes with no real meaning behind the action. It’s a shell game. People perform for others when they could just be genuine, they hide behind hollow gestures, and put out meaningless noise as if they have something real to say. When the masks come off, you see the truth. Make substantive moves. Stop playing the game. Life is too short.”
Pressure Set delivers short, sharp blasts of high-energy punk rock. The kind of music that makes you move, grab a stranger by the shoulder, rush the stage, and sing along to every word. The debut single also acts as the official teaser for Pressure Set’s upcoming debut album, slated for an early fall release with more singles to come. The band will perform at The Fest in Gainesville, FL this October.
