Saline Grace – The Tree Of Knowledge

What comes to your mind when someone mentions alternative rock? Captivating vocal harmonies, lush guitar works, intricate basslines, steady beats, and exceptional production? Well, these are all qualities that define some of the finest alternative rock recordings, but in an era where social media and streaming platforms have replaced tastemakers and radio hosts, those who actually played and recommended good music, it seems like we all became oversaturated by bad taste. Although the music industry works like never before, with many great artists and bands delivering music on a daily basis, there aren’t so many music outlets you could recommend to your friends or revisit again and again. In a world where algorithms reign supreme, only a few acts deserve your utmost attention for their creativity, talent, skills, experience, and knowledge. Saline Grace is definitely one of them, with their fresh, unique, innovative, exciting sound that always fascinates and elevates the listening experience to new heights. With “The Tree Of Knowledge,” their latest full-length album released on May 18th, Riccardo and Ines Hoffmann have created a masterpiece that goes beyond the genre by all possible means. Perhaps alternative rock dominates the most, as the duo incorporated all the fundamental elements of the genre, but do not be surprised if you stumble upon some of the finest properties borrowed from goth, post-punk, darkwave, art rock, Americana, folk rock, etc. But it’s not all about the impressive amount of different yet complementary genres, but the way how Saline Grace incorporated them into particular segments or entire songs. Whether diving deep into calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal waters or shining with powerful moments where every instrument rings with power, this amalgam of styles is so carefully, wisely, and thoughtfully incorporated to serve the song’s purpose, ambiance, and mood, resulting in a listening experience rarely heard or seen on a contemporary music scene. This dedication to the craft is also rare, as Riccardo and Ines Hoffmann’s approach is entirely unique. Instead of letting all out through generous servings of fundamental elements that define those genres, they rather use them as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details, all while shining with that recognizable Saline Grace’s sound that drawn you to their music in the first place.

By offering twelve exceptional songs, this band not only proves there’s a lot of room for experimentation in the alternative rock scene, but they also showcase their versatility as songwriters, composers, musicians, and producers. Take the introductory piece, “The Tree Of Knowledge,” as an example. While dominantly shining with everything you dearly love about goth and post-punk music, this song also carries everything that makes alternative rock so great. Every baritone vocal line, lush guitar and synth works, and groovy rhythm section keep you entertained and convince you to embark on this beautiful journey. With “Lethal Anaconda” they introduce hypnotic, addictive, irresistible instrumentaitons that somehow penetrate your listening apparatus and refuse to let go long after the last notes and beats fade away. On the other hand, “Raven Berta” relies more upon beautiful soundscapes, cleverly stacked atop one another, and resonating in all their glory. This composition in particular exemplifies their versatility as a band, as they prove they’re no strangers to writing and producing cinematic ambient compositions that could easily end up as soundtracks to artsy movies. The band continues at the same style with “Individual Case,” another fine piece of sonic artistry that channels cinematic ambiance with a strong presence of goth. The pulsating, warm-sounding basslines contribute all the power you need while the combination of jangly, angular guitars and lush synth pads constructs that mesmerizing soundscape, keeping you occupied from start to finish. At first, the drums act as occasional accentuations, but as the song progresses, they develop into rhythmic patterns, giving this song more than necessary groove and pace. With “Autumn Realms,” Saline Grace showcases their folk rock side, but as is usually is the case, in their unique way. There’s a certain drive that propels this song to new heights. The rhythm section gives that recognizable beat while the mandolin offers a catchy, memorable, engaging theme. The synths and brass section merge together seamlessly, creating a luxurious atmosphere that perfectly pairs everything. And the songs like “The Descent” and “Rooms To Let” exemplify Saline Grace’s exceptional songwriting. It’s nearly mindblowing how vocals deliver each word, and sonic maneuvers sway all around with such elegance. It’s pure art in all possible means, and Saline Grace perfected this sound, showing off years of commitment and knowledge.

Perhaps “Grapes” continues in the same style and pace, but there’s something about this composition that makes it unique. Maybe it’s Riccardo Hoffman’s baritone voice, or captivating back vocal layers provided by Ines Hoffmann, lurking in the background and making this song even more appealing to the ears, but it definitely works for Saline Grace in the best possible way. It’s one of those songs that you’ll gladly place on your playlist. “Bloody Tears” blends some of the finest properties of goth rock, post-punk, and alternative rock, creating an ambiance that will leave even the pickiest listeners speechless. It arrives with hypnotic soundscapes, evolves with time like a good book, and captivates you with magnificent instrumentations, and ends with calm amospheric lines, descenting into fade out effect. “Skaggerak” could be an adequate soundtrack, as it carries that gothy, medieval, dark atmospherics, adorned with many ethno and world music orchestrations. This epic sonic journey ends with “Memories Of Winter #2” and “Weeping Wounds,” two incredible goth rock songs where the duo sums up everything they’ve intended to achieve with this material. It’s a perfect closure of such a remarkable album that will force you to embark on this epic sonic journey over and over again. Once again, Saline Grace showcases why they’re one of the finest German alternative rock duos you’ll ever stumble upon. With “The Tree Of Knowledge,” they’ve created a masterpiece that blends everything you ever needed from alternative, goth rock, post-punk, folk rock, and cinematic music, but do not be surprised if you stumble upon many other styles, because these experienced musicians never cease to amaze. If you love your music dark, poetic, romantic, and captivating, you should give “The Tree Of Knowledge” a listen, because it will become a staple in your record collection.
