Los Angeles trio Orchids of Jupiter has released “Cannibal Valentines,” a lush and witchy “carnivorous waltz.” The single is accompanied by a music video created in collaboration with Fangs on Fur, utilizing entirely hand-made practical effects such as ice, candy, and paper. The band—consisting of Karie Jacobson, Michel von Loh, and Ali Breault—has been described as a “black-clad B-52s,” moving seamlessly between psychedelic drift and post-punk urgency.
Jacobson’s vocals have been compared to a midnight ritual, while von Loh’s classical training adds unique Persian and Arab influences to their sonic palette. “Cannibal Valentines” is the latest glimpse into their forthcoming self-titled debut album, a project rooted in dark fairy tales and mythological depths. Their music creates an immersive world of “caged hurricanes” and “Nile lilies” that is both sinisterly accessible and soul-addicting.
