Kalligary – I Never

What happens when you spend some time contemplating life and its events, examining each moment, situation, and circumstance, and considering what might not happen if you decided to do things differently? In the case of Kalligary, it turns out to be a marvelous song that explores various sentiments, moods, situations, and circumstances in great detail, and most importantly, far from anything you could hear and see on a contemporary music scene nowadays. To be honest, it takes a lot of courage to open up in front of a crowd, release a song, and share intimacy with a broad audience like this, but releasing your musical works is all about it, isn’t it? “I Never” carries that particular emotion that immediately penetrates your listening apparatus, grabs you by the collar, and refuses to let go long after the last note’s beats fade away. It’s an emotional rollercoaster crafted with great care to detail yet it floats freely around you due to its calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal atmosphere. It has a lot to do with how Kalligary uses all those techniques, approaches, and styles in order to shape a perfect sonic imagery that will immediately draw your attention. Perhaps an alternative comes to mind first, but do not be surprised if you stumble upon some of the finest properties of indie rock, indie pop, pop rock, and other similar genres. Each element has its place and purpose here, as it serves as a building block of a colossal sonic structure that definitely stands out from anything else you could hear on the contemporary music scene.

Perhaps Kalligary employs dark ambiance throughout the song, as the lyric content contemplates the hardships of life, but there’s a glimpse of hope awaiting around every moment, and that’s just one of the qualities that make this track so emotionally and sonically appealing. The artist carries a dosage of sadness and melancholy in his voice during the verses, but the choruses are quite powerful, heavy, colossal, and, dare to say, cheerful, in the lack of a better word. During those moments, Kalligary sonically brings a glimpse of hope that will explain to the listener that, even in the toughest and emotionally exhausting moments in our lives, there is light at the end of the tunnel, waiting for us to reach it. With his voice, Kalligary emphasizes everything to new heights, commands attention, and guides the listeners on this epic sonic journey. His soulful, emotional, honest, and powerful vocal performance seamlessly balances low, mid, and high notes with such precision and finesse, achieving more than necessary emotional depth and complexity that makes this song so complex. In the meantime, the comprehensive collection of carefully, wisely, and tastefully crafted guitar works shapes a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. You’ll stumble upon many catchy, memorable, engaging, arpeggiated chord progressions, palm-muted and regular riffs, lurking around and offering a soundscape for all those captivating themes, melodies, harmonies, and other sonic maneuvers to shine. This interplay between various guitar layers sounds so impressive, ethereal, and otherworldly, perfectly complementing Kalligary’s voice. Also, the way he employs various dosages of distortion or echo, reverb, and delay effects plays a significant role in this sonic equation, making “I Never” complex not only on a lyrical, but also sonic level.

Of course, there’s also a rhythmic support that makes this song so groovy and powerful. At first, you’ll notice how all those intricate, deep, warm-sounding, vividly hearable basslines rumble beneath the lush guitar works, contributing immense warmth, depth, clarity, and heaviness without ever overwhelming the mentioned orchestrations. Besides all of that, the bass guitar also acts as a binding element that glues guitar and rhyhtmic patterns together. Kalligary cleverly and tastefully blended all together without spoiling anything. Also, the remainder of the rhythm section provides well-accentuated, tastefully assembled, moderate beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics, ensuring that “I Never” always carries a generous serving of groove and detail. “I Never” is a masterpiece that vividly showcases how alternative and indie rock, when done right, can still sound fresh, unique, innovative, exciting, and emotionally deep like the first time you’ve heard it. This song also positions Kalligary as one of the finest German singer-songwriters in a genre, as he demonstrates all his brilliance through lyrical and sonic creativity, talent, and skill. “I Never” will impress and elevate you to new heights, so you should check it out immediately.
