Ohio-born punk-leaning indie rockers Signals Midwest are thrilled to share their career-spanning, sixth full-length album, Layovers, which features a curated collection of rarities, B-sides, 7″ tracks, live sessions, and covers. It’s out today via Lauren Records.
The songs that comprise Layovers are borne of different critical points within Signals Midwest’s lifetime. Focus track “Whole Half Century,” for instance, was an outtake from the At This Age sessions in 2015, recorded at Atlas Studios in Chicago and produced by Evan Weiss (Into It. Over It.). “I can hear us grappling, growing, and pushing ourselves on this song,” says vocalist/guitarist Max Stern. “Everything we’ve made over the last decade has been informed in some way by the sessions that it stemmed from.”
Even with the convenience of modern streaming services, diving into a long-running band’s catalog can feel overwhelming. Layovers offers listeners an entry point, a curated “scrapbook” of songs that fill in the blanks between major releases. “When I look at the tracklist, it feels like a way to trace my life and our band’s existence.”
Layovers is now streaming on major platforms. Signals Midwest will also be on tour this fall with dates along the US East Coast, Midwest, and Canada.
Geography is important, so here’s a rundown: Signals Midwest is an indie-rock-tinged punk band from Cleveland, Ohio. Members currently reside in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland. Since forming in 2008, they have released five full-length albums and a slew of split 7″s and EPs. “Siggies”, as one particularly eloquent fan dubbed the group somewhere along the line, has played just shy of 500 shows in North America, Europe, the UK, Australia, and Japan.
