The Sea At Midnight – Burning

Burning” is the latest release by The Sea At Midnight, an excellent Los Angeles-based band. It’s the fourth piece of work in 2024, arriving as an adequate follow-up of “Midnight Sun,” “Wait For Rain,” and “Chopping Them Down,” three exceptional compositions released this year that you should also check out. Lyrically, talks about living on Earth during climate change and all the upheaval and havoc it is leaving in its wake. Marco Cattani of Chemical Waves takes a deep dive into all the struggles mankind faces because of ongoing climate change, and his explanatory, storytelling lyricism makes “Burning” a highly relatable song that will immediately resonate with the broader auditorium. Soundwise, the band combines several different but complementary music genres to illustrate such rich and luxurious sonic imagery. Perhaps post-punk comes to mind first, but you’ll notice how some of the finest properties borrowed from alternative and indie rock music found their way into this sonic equation. The Sea At Midnight uses all these additional sonic ingredients as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to uplift their latest single to an entirely new level while simultaneously remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, these experimentations with several different but complementary styles resulted in a catchy, memorable, engaging, mesmerizing number that will immediately appeal to even the pickiest post-punk fans.

With the initial notes and beats, you’ll notice that these folks are not joking around with their sound. “Burning” arrives with a perfect structure, garnered with many intricate segments, brilliant ideas, and marvelous orchestrations. Each vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuver has its place and purpose in this sonic equation, ensuring such a pleasant listening experience worth repeating over and over again. As soon as you press play, you’ll hear the otherwordly synth melodies roaming around. These orchestrations gradually become even more complex by introducing more themes, melodies, harmonies, sequences, and other sonic maneuvers. In the meantime, the interplay between rhythm and lead guitars offers more complexity and depth to the song. You’ll notice how the powerful riffs and chord progressions resonate on one side while the catchy, memorable, engaging leads, themes, arpeggiated chord progressions, and accentuations shine on the other. The generous servings of reverb effect add more dreamy vibes, elevating the atmosphere to new heights. All these instrumentations shape such a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. You’ll notice how the beautiful vocal harmonies command attention and guide the listening apparatus from scratch to finish. The impressive vocal range seamlessly balances low, mid, and high notes while the subtle raspiness adds a perfect contrast to the polished orchestrations. These outstanding vocal maneuvers emphasize each segment and instrumentation while contributing to the emotional depth and complexity of an already intricate song. Also, it’s nearly mindblowing how the vocals perfectly pair synths and guitars throughout the entire track, making this epic sonic voyage even more enjoyable.

Of course, this marvelous song wouldn’t be complete without the rock-solid rhythm section. You’ll stumble upon equally detailed, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines, which rumble beneath all those orchestrations and provide more heaviness, clarity, and depth while binding synths and guitars with rhythmic patterns. These basslines are rich, dense, and warm and perfectly suit the song’s ambiance. The experienced drummer brings this excellent song to an entirely new level with expertly assembled, flawlessly performed, well-accentuated, moderate beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics. Those rhythmic sequences keep the remainder of the instrumentation in line while dictating groove and tempo. As you can see and hear, The Sea At Midnight thought about everything while writing, composing, arranging, and producing their latest single, so if the synths and guitars act as a perfect backdrop for all vocal articulations, then the rhythm section serves as a backbone, holding everything together. “Burning” is a post-punk masterpiece, a meaningful song carrying a meaningful message. It’s a rallying cry for humanity to come to its senses and change its habits before Earth becomes inhabitable. Sonically, The Sea At Midnight’s ideas and musicianship is on full display, as each band member delivers a fascinating performance that defines the vibrant ambiance of this musical masterpiece. You should place The Sea At Midnight and their music on your radar as soon as possible, because they unquestionably deserve your attention. The single is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
