The title says it all: splits can be inevitable (“splitsville”), forced (“splitter!”), pathological (“split brain”) or deliberately driven (“split the rich”). But what happens if you keep splitting things further and further? Do you eventually arrive back at nuance, a plurality of opinions and community?
With le_mol’s largely instrumental music, the song titles serve as clues for interpretation. One exception is “split tongue”, featuring existentialist lyrics by Viennese cyborg-folk musician The Zew. The concept continues in the artwork, featuring collages and monotypes by Hanna Hollmann.
Using several loop stations, le_mol sound far bigger than you might expect from just two multi-instrumentalists: layers emerge, disappear again and break out of familiar structures. Loops stick together – they never split!
The focus track “one third split second” moves from contemplative piano lines through electronic loops and drum grooves before building into a Godspeed You! Black Emperor-esque finale of E-Bows, walls of distorted guitars and ghostly snare drums.
