MUDD – Time Goes By (Nothing’s Changed)

Time Goes By (Nothing’s Changed)” is the latest song by MUDD, an excellent quartet based in Columbus, Ohio. It’s their second piece of work in 2024, acting as a perfect follow-up of “Laughing Gas,” a marvelous five-track extended play release that you should also check out as soon as possible. Lyrically, this song encapsulates all the bittersweet feelings of growing up and becoming independent. Sonically, MUDD combines many different but complementary music genres to illustrate such a rich and luxurious sound. Perhaps alternative comes to mind since the band embraces all the vital elements of this longevous music genre, but you’ll unquestionably stumble upon indie rock, pop rock, classic rock, and many more styles along the way. The band expertly mashes up nostalgia with a modern approach, creating a wondrous listening experience worth revisiting over and over again. Also, they use all these additional sonic ingredients as more than necessary enhancements and decorations while retaining their primary sonic direction intact. Therefore, these experimentations with various rock subgenres resulted in a magnificent composition that will appeal to anyone even remotely interested in rock music.

With the initial notes and beats, it becomes evident that MUDD invested heart and soul into this number. “Time Goes By (Nothing’s Changed)” has a perfect structure, garnered with many intricate segments, brilliant ideas, and instrumentations. They draw influences from the greats such as King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Tame Impala, GUM, and Jungle, but their music goes beyond comprehension thanks to so many signature moves and unique ambiance rarely heard or seen on the contemporary music scene. The expertly assembled guitar interplay shapes a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. The comprehensive collection of detailed, tastefully arranged, heavily distorted chord progressions, riffs, harmonies, melodies, and themes creates an otherwordly atmosphere that indulges the listening apparatus from beginning to end. In the meantime, the excellent vocal harmonies serve as a centerpiece, emphasizing all those segments and instrumentation. The impressive vocal range seamlessly balances low, mid, and high notes while commanding attention and guiding the listening apparatus on this mesmerizing sonic voyage. They also thought about the additional back vocals and singalongs, which undoubtedly spice things up. Also, it’s nearly mindblowing how all these vocal harmonies and guitar works match together harmoniously.

MUDD also thought about the rhythm section, so you’ll hear how the bass guitar and drums propel this song to new heights. The equally complex, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines rumble beneath the guitars, offering heaviness, clarity, and depths while binding all these instruments with rhythmic patterns. You’ll notice how excellent drumming uplifts this song on an entirely new level with well-accentuated, energetic beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics. These drumming sequences keep everything in line while dictating grove and pace. Each band member offers a superb performance, making “Time Goes By (Nothing’s Changed)” such a pleasant listening experience. By applying so many vital ingredients of indie, pop rock, and classic rock over an alternative rock base, MUDD created an otherwordly ambiance where each vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuver sounds divine. Their experience, knowledge, skills, and talent shine during every segment, proving that alternative rock music still has so much to offer. “Time Goes By (Nothing’s Changed)” is a marvelous sonic experience you should check out as soon as possible, because these folks poured heart and soul into it, resulting in an alternative rock masterpiece that will undoubtedly become your favorite track of the year.
