Pitiful Small-time Dealers – To The Freedomland CD (Fast Decade Records)

Pitiful Small-time Dealers have returned with their second album, released on CD via prolific Finnish skatepunk label Fast Decade Records. Following the footsteps of its self-titled predecessor, the band combines only the finest properties of the nineties skate punk sound with the aesthetics of classic melodic punk rock and subtle touches of retro pop-punk sound. Considering it has been two years since their previous self-titled effort, you can notice all the innovations in songwriting, composing, arranging, and producing. Pitiful Small-time Dealers already sounded good, but this time, they set the bar high for anyone even remotely interested in playing that recognizable nineties-inspired skate punk sound. Usually, bands interested in skate punk sound begin their albums with faster tracks, so this decision comes as a pleasant refreshment and surprise. “Start Song” is an appropriate overture to “To The Freedomland”, offering mid-tempo melodic maneuvers characteristic for the earlier pop-punk bands. Still, this track leans much more melodic punk rock alley thanks to many cleverly assembled, palm-muted chord progressions, riffs, vividly hearable basslines, and outstanding drumming sequences. The vocals also shine here, providing that anthemic punk rock vibes to the mix. The band sails much faster waters with “Through Everything,” a classic skate-punk track decorated with a subtle touch of modern melodic hardcore. This style suits them well, with all arpeggiated chord progressions decorating choruses, while the verses shine with marvelous riffs. The rhythm section emits tremendous power through intricate basslines and vigorous drumming. If you’re looking for a true sound of Pitiful Small-time Dealers, this track perfectly demonstrates their abilities.

They go even more technical on “Only Ashes Remain,” with magnificent leads, themes, melodies, and harmonies lurking around while the lead vocals and singalongs resonate with power, confidence, and sincerity. After two energetic tracks, the band slows down the pace, but only during the intro. “Break Out” is the perfect continuation of the previous songs, with clever arrangements, brilliant ideas, and flawless musicianship decorating every segment of this track. “I’m Here Today” showcases the ska-punk side of the Pitiful Small-time Dealers. This style suits them well like they played ska punk music for decades. You can expect classic chops, marvelous basslines, perfect drumming, and more singalongs. It’s also good to mention that Pitiful Small-time Dealers are experienced songwriters who know how to write and compose engaging tracks that will resonate with the broader auditorium. “Memories Of Yesterday” resembles something Pennywise would eventually record in the early noughties, with the repetitious melody, heavy riffs, and robust drumming. This track seems more hardcore than others, and it suits as an adequate follow-up to the mentioned ska-punk orchestrations. This ear-appealing voyage closes with “Worth Fighting For,” such a perfectly assembled skate-punk song with several tempo changes included along the way.
