Dethcaps – Hide & Seek

Hide & Seek” is the latest single by Dethcaps, a San Francisco-based trio. It’s their first single 2024 that serves as an adequate follow-up to “Candied Peaches,” “On The Run,” and “Nightstand,” three exceptional compositions released last year. Soundwise, Dethcaps combine many different but complementary music genres to depict such a rich and luxurious sonic imagery. Perhaps grunge comes to mind first, but you’ll undoubtedly hear how some other genres found their way into this fine piece of sonic artistry. Don’t be surprised if you stumble upon some of the finest properties borrowed from shoegaze, alternative, stoner rock, indie rock, noise pop, dream pop, etc. Dethcaps use all these additional elements as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details that unquestionably uplift their latest number on an entirely new level, while they simultaneously remain loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, their experimentations resulted in a mesmerizing song that will appeal to even the pickiest fans of the mentioned genres and beyond.

As soon as you press play, you’ll notice how much attention Dethcaps paid while writing, composing, arranging, recording, and producing their latest single. Dual vocals are one of their strongest weapons in the arsenal, as they serve as a centerpiece that emphasizes all the segments and instrumentations. The perfectly aligned female and male vocal dualities give a touch of complexity, while their perfect balance between low, mid, and high notes decorates everything they intended to achieve with this song. The guitars shine in the limelight from scratch to finish with all the raw, abrasive, fuzzy, heavily distorted leads, themes, melodies, harmonies, chord progressions, and riffs. They sound powerful, heavy, and aggressive but yet so calm, soothing, relaxing, and ethereal. Dethcaps somehow managed to incorporate the best of both worlds, and that makes this track so unique.

Of course, this track wouldn’t sound this good without equally distorted, profoundly detailed, vividly hearable low-ends, and you’ll notice how the bass guitar offers more than necessary heaviness, depth, and clarity, but also serves as a binding element between guitars and drums. The drumming on “Hide & Seek” is also another standout feature, with cleverly arranged rhythmic sequences based upon moderate, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics dictating groove and pace, but also keeping the remainder of the instrumentations in line. The rhythm section plays a significant role as much as vocals and guitars, so Dethcaps combines all of these elements to perfection.

You should immediately check out “Hide & Seek” if you’re into modern grunge, shoegaze, or indie music. Dethcaps should be on our radar all the time because these folks have all the tools of the trade to deliver marvelous songs. Their latest single exemplifies their knowledge, skill, and talent, proving that all the mentioned music genres can still sound fresh and unique. The single is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
