Hot Garbage – Precious Dream CD (Exag’ Records, Mothland)

Hot Garbage unleashes a sonic storm with their second full-length release, “Precious Dream,” a garage rock masterpiece that effortlessly melds raw, abrasive, and heavily distorted elements from a comprehensive collection of music genres. Hailing from Toronto, the band intricately weaves together influences from the seventies and eighties post-punk, punk rock, psych-rock, art-rock, and more, creating a volatile yet irresistibly palatable amalgamation of sound.

At the forefront of this sonic tapestry is Hot Garbage’s outstanding vocal performance, which serves as the driving force behind the hypnotic, catchy, raw, reverby maneuvers and energetic beats that define their music. The occasional inclusion of female lead and backing vocals, along with singalongs, adds a more than necessary layer of complexity to an already intricate ambiance. This dynamic interplay creates a nostalgic and refreshingly contemporary sonic experience. “Precious Dream” takes listeners on a journey through the vital eras of the late sixties, seventies, eighties, and nineties, showcasing Hot Garbage’s adept exploration of the sonic landscapes from these iconic decades. Yet, amidst the throwbacks, keen ears will catch sonic maneuvers reminiscent of modern garage rock, proving that Hot Garbage is not just tapping into the past but also pushing the boundaries of the genre.

Musically, the band’s prowess is evident in their reverby, catchy leads, themes, harmonies, chord progressions, and riffs. These sonic maneuvers serve as a perfect backdrop for the vocal performance, creating a synergy that elevates the overall sonic experience. The rhythm section, featuring basslines that bring heaviness, depth, and clarity, and exceptional drumming that dictates groove and pace with well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and percussive acrobatics, enhances the listening experience to another level. Produced by the visionary Graham Walsh (METZ, Preoccupations, Holy Fuck, !!!), “Precious Dream” exemplifies all the attention Hot Garbage paid during the writing, composing, arranging, recording, and production processes. The brooding arrangements and deliberate craftsmanship showcase their dedication to their craft.

“Precious Dream” offers an exhilarating breath of fresh air into the rich and luxurious garage rock, post-punk, and modern psychedelia world, providing a cathartic and introspective listening experience. In essence, Hot Garbage has delivered an album that not only pays homage to the roots of garage rock, post-punk, and psych-rock but also propels the genre into uncharted territories, making it a must-listen for fans of the genre and beyond. “Precious Dream” is available in several vinyl variants and digipak CD. Head to their Bandcamp page for more information about ordering.
