Camens – Cynical

Cynical” is the latest single by Camens, a Stoke-On-Trent rock quartet. It’s their first song in 2024 and an adequate follow-up of “On The Walk From The Picturehouse,” another single released last year. Soundwise, Camens explores many different but complementary subgenres of rock music. Perhaps modern alternative rock comes to mind first, but you’ll notice how some of the finest properties borrowed from nineties rock, garage, grunge, and indie rock found their way into this fine piece of sonic artistry. The band skillfully levitates between modern and retro sonic maneuvers, making “Cynical” such a fresh and unique piece that will undoubtedly appeal to even the pickiest alternative rock fans.

As soon as you press play, you’ll notice how much effort Camens invested into this song. It shines with brilliant ideas and impressive musicianship from scratch to finish. The outstanding vocal performance skillfully balances between low, mid, and high notes, emphasizing all the segments and instrumentations with such ease. These vocal harmonies also add a touch of complexity and guide the listeners through every part of the song. The cleverly assembled dualities between lead and rhythm guitars act as an adequate backdrop for these vocal maneuvers. It’s nearly mindblowing how the catchy, pleasant, ethereal themes, leads, and melodies shine on one, and powerful, generously distorted chord progressions burst on the other side. Camens thoroughly planned these sonic maneuvers, and every segment of “Cynical” arrives with many sonic delicacies and surprises.

Of course, this song wouldn’t be complete without equally complex, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines that offer more than necessary heaviness, depth, and clarity, but also serve as a binding element between guitars and drums. The outstanding drumming performance based upon energetic, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics dictates groove and pace while simultaneously keeping the remainder of the band in line. Each instrument plays a significant role in shaping such a rich and luxurious ambiance.

“Cynical” exemplifies Camens’ brilliance. These folks know how to write, compose, arrange, record, and produce marvelous alternative rock songs where all the vital ingredients of the genre shine. They even took a step further and incorporated garage, grunge, and indie elements into their latest track, but keeping in mind that alternative is still their primary sonic direction. Camens and their new single demand your utmost attention because these guys prove alternative rock can still sound catchy, innovative, and powerful. The single is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
