Herds – Just The Rain

Herds - Just The Rain

Nottingham-based psych-rock quintet Herds recently released “Just the Rain,” a second single from their forthcoming full-length album, due for release this Friday, October 20th. Consisting of experienced musicians, Herds dive deep into the aesthetics of the genre. Still, “Just the Rain” carries some sonic ingredients borrowed from complementary styles like indie rock, synth rock, or power pop. These additional elements serve as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details that uplift this number on an entirely new level, while the band remains loyal to the primary sonic direction. Herds thoroughly planned the song structure, so you’ll notice how every segment carries many wisely arranged instrumentations that are equally hearable. The band also thought about the production, so besides skillful writing and composing, you’ll be amazed how even the tiniest details resonate in the mix thanks to their attention to recording and producing.

The outstanding lead vocal performance is the centerpiece, and the perfect balance between low, mid, and high notes emphasizes cleverly assembled semi-distorted chord progressions. The guitars shape an ethereal soundscape alongside ear-appealing synth leads, melodies, and ambiances, while the equally hearable, warm-sounding basslines offer more heaviness, depth, and clarity. The dynamic drumming performance based upon well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics provides groove and pace but also keeps the remainder of the instrumentations in line. Every member plays a significant role in shaping such a danceable, intricate, and mesmerizing psych-rock sound that will appeal to even the pickiest fans of the genre. Perhaps “Just the Rain” carries many complex instrumentations delivered by immensely creative musicians, but they also have a perfect sense of balance between progressive orchestrations and much calmer, ear-appealing melodies and harmonies. Therefore, “Just the Rain” will appeal to even those listeners who are stumbling upon psych-rock as a genre for the first time.

As soon as you press play, you’ll notice that Herds are not joking around with their music. There are many reasons why they picked “Just the Rain” as their second single. The ambiance achieved by stacking beautiful vocal harmonies, catchy chord progressions, complex basslines, and dynamic rhythmic sequences invites you to dive deep into their upcoming full-length album. “Just the Rain” is available on all streaming services. Don’t miss it!
