After a couple of well-received singles like Magnetic and Smash And Grab, Liverpool-based immensely energetic punk rock trio The Marigolds returns with My Undoing. This particular single is their most recent piece that appropriately continues their previous works but also showcases many innovations in terms of songwriting, composing, and sound in general. If you’re stumbling upon this band for the first time, prepare yourself for their unique take on the punk rock because The Marigolds included many other elements in their music as well. Perhaps the band dominantly relies upon the fundamentals of punk rock, but you’ll also hear some of the finest properties of grunge, alternative, indie, hard rock, industrial, and funk included along the way. There are even some segments where you’ll notice some elements of psych-rock too.
My Undoing resonates with tremendous power, heaviness, abrasiveness, and dynamics from scratch to finish. You’ll solely enjoy their progressive rock’n’roll riffs drenched in generous servings of distortion and equally complex, semi-distorted low-end tones. It’s nearly mindblowing how the performances of these two instruments perfectly match in the mix. They almost sound like a singular instrument, indicating that these folks are skillful musicians in it with all their hearts and souls. Of course, nothing would sound so profoundly dynamic without an exceptional drumming performance that bursts with energetic rhythmic sequences, clever accentuations over the cymbals, drum fills, and other percussive acrobatics. The lead vocalist continuously levitates between aggressive shoutouts and clean/melodic chants, and this singing technic perfectly suits their style. You’ll also hear choir-like singalongs in the background that serve as enhancement and decoration. My Undoing possesses many other qualities, but it would be a shame not to discover them by yourself. The single is available on all streaming platforms, so I highly advise you to check it out.
