Origami Summer - Thanks, I Hate It

Thanks, I Hate It” is the latest track by Origami Summer, an outstanding Denver, Colorado-based band. It’s their second piece of work in 2024, serving as a follow-up of “Your New Aesthetic,” their six-track extended play release, published earlier this year. Soundwise, Origami Summer combines fundamentals of contemporary post-hardcore music with some of the finest properties borrowed from many different but complementary subgenres. Don’t be surprised if you stumble upon math rock, screamo, emo, alternative, and indie elements lurking around because these creative musicians fully stacked their latest track with all vital qualities of these subgenres. They use all these elements as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to uplift their song on an entirely new level while simultaneously remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, these experimentations with different but complementary styles resulted in an outstanding composition that will appeal to even the pickiest listeners and beyond.

As soon as you press play, you’ll notice that Origami Summer thoroughly planned everything. “Thanks, I Hate It” arrives with a perfect song structure, stacked with many complex segments and impressive instrumentations. The band poured all their ideas, heart, and soul into it, ensuring this track will suit every listening apparatus. The instrumentations sound absolutely divine. You’ll immediately stumble upon the interplay between rhythm and lead guitars. The expertly assembled, flawlessly performed, heavily distorted riffs resonate on one side, while the other shines with catchy, engaging, themes, leads, melodies, harmonies, and other sonic maneuvers. All these orchestrations create a colossal wall of calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal ambiance, but you’ll also notice how the band goes entirely into progressive math-rock and math-core at some points. All these orchestrations provide a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon.

Speaking of vocals, the combination of calm clean singing and screams works to the advantage of this track. You’ll hear how the vocalist commands attention and guides your ears during each moment while simultaneously emphasizing all the segments and instrumentations. These vocal harmonies seamlessly glide over low, mid, and high notes, adding a touch of complexity to the ambiance. Origami Summer also thought about the rhythm section. You’ll notice how equally intricate, audible, warm-sounding low-ends rumble beneath guitar layers, offering more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth while binding all those instruments with drums. The experienced drummer propels this song to new heights by dictating groove and tempo with many cleverly assembled, dynamic,well-accentuated rhythmic patterns. Besides keeping everything in line with intricate beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics, the drums give a whole new dimension to the song. Each band member plays a significant role in this marvelous sonic equation, ensuring nothing but a pleasant listening experience.

“Thanks, I Hate It” will be right up your alley no matter if you’re a post-hardcore fan or not. This song carries so many vital elements from many complementary genres, offering an entire specter of delicate, flawlessly performed instrumentations. Origami Summer shines with tremendous experience, knowledge, skill, and talent, and all these qualities are vividly hearable from scratch to finish. They undoubtedly poured heart and soul into “Thanks, I Hate It,” resulting in one of the best post-hardcore songs this year. Another thing worth pointing out is how they break all the rules and shapeshift boundaries of the genre with their unpredictable sonic maneuvers, so this track stands out from anything you can hear on the contemporary post-hardcore scene. The single is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
