A multi-hyphenate artist with a literary background, Julia Minkin studied Comparative Literature at NYU and is currently an MFA candidate in Fiction at the Bennington Writing Seminars. Her work as a writer and musician often overlaps, with an interest in subtly complex narratives.
Julia Minkin first made her mark in 2014 through her work with Kid Francescoli, collaborating on the albums With Julia and Play Me Again. Their songs found audiences around the world, appearing in advertising campaigns and film and television placements, while “Moon (And It Went Like)” became a viral sensation and has amassed more than 150 million streams across platforms.
With Not Ready, Julia Minkin turns inward. The album blends French Touch, 80s pop, indie folk, and synth-driven indie pop, pairing warm, understated vocals with dance-floor energy, sly wit, and emotionally resonant lyrics.
The songs circle misguided attractions and complex loves, and the complicated experience of being a woman onstage. “Some of them are looking-back songs,” Minkin says. “In the past, I was working really hard to be pleasing and that took so much of my energy and it took away from my ability to be creating for myself—whether music or writing. I couldn’t get out from under the fear that people wouldn’t approve or validate what I put out there. I’ve been slowly liberating myself from that.”
Although Not Ready was not conceived as a concept album, its songs emerged from the same period of Minkin’s life, creating a portrait of someone moving—sometimes reluctantly—toward a more self-directed version of herself.
“I wanted to do it properly. For myself.”
