Let’s be honest, the punk rock scene has become oversaturated with all those sugar-coated, mellow, same old, repetitive, bland bands, who often deliver recordings that do come nowhere near the ethos and politics the underground punk rock scene stands for. Sadly, punk rock has become one of those genres that have been repetitively diluted and washed over for the masses, streaming platforms, social media, and influencers who rarely know what punk rock is all about. But if you take a deep dive beneath the surface and pay close attention to what’s happening on the underground scene, you’ll find an entire palette of exceptional bands. You’ll be surprised by the sheer quality, persistance, and quality, and many of them will almost instantly become a staple on your playlists and record collections. SUCK is unquestionably one of those bands that demands your utmost attention. With “Gimme Gabba Gabba,” their marvelous 10” extended play release, published by a prolific Hamburg-based record label La Pochete Surprise, in March of 2025, they deliver four incredible compositions that could, by their definition and structure, be a true representative of how punk rock should sound nowadays. What makes this EP such a brilliant showcase is how these songs channel that sweet, in-your-face punk rock aggression and attitude. The band does not waste your time; they’re not here to force you to understand anything but solely focus on a message and music, and that’s it. Take it with a grain of salt, take it seriously, or take it as you want it. SUCK are one of those bands existing with the pure intention of delivering a heavy, abrasive, dynamic, groovy punk rock sound, adorned with abrasive verses and anthemic choruses. Of course, there are also additional styles involved here, like garage rock and hardcore punk, but these are just enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other similar details and nuances that make “Gimme Gabba Gabba” even more pleasant to the ears.
Right with the initial notes and beats, SUCK does not spare punches. Quite the contrary, the title track brings all the heaviness, power, abrasion, and speed you desperately needed. The way those raw, unfiltered, gritty, dirty, aggressive, fuzzy guitar riffs and equally impressive, distorted, chunky yet warm basslines articulate here is nearly mind-blowing. Together, they shape a perfect platform for outstanding vocal performance to shine upon. The fierce, aggressive, raw shouts are flawlessly paired with more melodic vocal lines, yet there’s an omnipresent hardcore punk, punk rock, garage quality infused into these songs. Screams, shouts, and other vocal articulations have their sole purpose here, and that’s delivering unfiltered energy that is also channeled by the remainder of the band. And just when you thought this band could not sound any better, SUCK delivers a d-beat anthem. “Medusa” channels everything you dearly love about this subgenre through well-accentuated, groovy, dynamic, fast-paced beats, breaks, fills, accentuations, and other percussive acrobatics. Each hit of the snare, kick of the bass drum, accentuation over hi-hats, and all the splashes over cymbals have their place and purpose, decorating, elevating, and spicing up all those gritty basslines and powerful riffs. “Runnin’ (Till I Die)” is another hectic composition leaning towards modern mid-tempo hardcore punk, assembled and performed in a recognizable SUCK manner. The sheer amount of dirtiness, grittiness, abrasion, and aggression delivered through all the orchestration goes beyond comprehension, and there are always lead and back vocals backing up that colossal sound with such precision and finesse. This band does not joke around, and they’re here to prove it with their brilliant ideas and outstanding musicianship. This epic sonic journey comes to an end with such a brilliant Motorhead cover that does justice to the original, but with a more modern, polished sound. It’s such a perfect closure of and epic raw punk rock extended play that you’ll gladly spin this entire gem all over again.
SUCK has delivered one of the finest punk rock recordings in recent years. “Gimme Gabba Gabba” is one of those EPs where all the aggression and power of the underground punk rock scene is channeled soulfully, passionately, and sincerely. It’s unquestionably the greatest punk rock release you’ll hear in a while. Head to La Pochete Surprise Records and purchase this gem on a 10” vinyl. You won’t be disappointed!
