Mermaid Avenue are back with another fine piece of sonic artistry that will not only appeal to longtime fans but also to everyone who appreciates cleverly assembled and flawlessly performed music. With all the songs previously released as standalone singles, and having built a steady following through community and independent radio play locally and internationally, the band used a wise strategy in promoting “Jacarandas,” their fourth full-length album, released on April 17th. It’s one of those recordings that immediately wraps around your listening apparatus and refuses to let go long after the last notes and beats fade due to perfect songwriting and outstanding musicianship. Lyrically, “Jacarandas” is based on Peter Clarke’s poetic storytelling. His songs explore various sentiments, moods, situations, and circumstances, making “Jacarandas” a highly relatable material that will immediately resonate with the broader auditorium. Sonically, perhaps alt-country dominates the most, as the band incorporated all the fundamental elements of the genre, but do not be surprised if you stumble upon some of the finest properties borrowed from Americana, blues rock, classic rock, indie rock, indie folk, and many more. Depending of the song’s mood, Mermaid Avenue implements these additional sonic ingredients as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to uplift the ambiance to new heights while simultaneously remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. Although this material shines with qualities that meet all the trends in contemporary music production, you’ll definitely notice how Mermaid Avenue incorporated a subtle touch of nostalgia into these compositions, making it suitable for longtime fans and newcomers to the alt-country genre. Therefore, Jacarandas” is one of those albums that you surely do not want to miss, because once you take a deep listen, it will easily become a staple in your record collection.
From the onset, it becomes apparent that Mermaid Avenue poured heart and soul into this material. Each composition arrives with a perfectly assembled song structure, garnered with clever arrangements, brilliant ideas, and outstanding musicianship. If verses convince you to pay attention to these songs while listening, then choruses will make you stay and repeat them all over again. Every song has its catchy, memorable, engaging moment that convinces you to place this album among the top records of the year. As soon as you press play, you’ll notice how vocals play a significant role here. They serve as a centerpiece, commanding attention, elevating everything to new heights, and guiding listeners on an epic sonic journey through the expansive sonic universe. The soulful, passionate, sincere, confident, powerful lead vocal performance seamlessly blends low, mid, and high notes, emphasizing everything Mermaid Avenue intended to achieve with this song. Besides decorating every segment and instrumentation, the vocal performance also contributes more than necessary emotional depth and complexity to already intricate songs. You’ll also notice the additonal vocal layers, back vocals, and sing-alongs, which in this case, add more depth and an anthemic vibe to the particular songs. In the meantime, the interplay between guitars shapes a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. You’ll notice how all those jangly, angular, yet tastefully distorted themes, melodies, harmonies, chord progressions, riffs, leads, and other sonic maneuvers resonate all the time, making this material so catchy and ear-appealing. The band skillfully uses acoustic and electric guitars, depending on the song’s mood. There are also some slide-guitar layers, tastefully drenched in reverb for some extra Americana flavor. It perfectly suits a particular composition, contributing to its lush ambiance. The additional themes, melodies, harmonies, and chord progressions performed on keys add more depth and detail without ever overwhelming the guitars. It’s nearly mindblowing how all these layers articulate together throughout the entire album without ever spoiling each other, proving that Mermaid Avenue thought about everything while working on this material. Also, you’ll notice a marvelous violin performance on the last song that really uplifts it on an entirely new level and forces you to spin this material all over again.
Of course, this epic sonic journey wouldn’t be complete without the equally impressive rhythm section. You’ll hear how the intricate, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines rumble beneath the guitars and keys, contributing more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth while simultaneously acting as a binding element between the mentioned instrumentations and rhyhtmic patterns. The exceptional drumming, based upon tastefully arranged, flawlessly performed, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics, keep the remainder of the band in line while dictating groove and pace. As you can see and hear, Mermaid Avenue thought about everything while assembling “Jacarandas.” Songs like “Talk Pretty,” “First Move,” “More Than This,” “The Bigger They Are (The Harder They Fall),” “Imagine Ruth,” “My Symphathy,” and Boy In The Mirror (feat. Melinda Coles) are definite standout tracks, but you should unquestionably listen the album in its entirety, because the entire material shines with brilliant vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuvers. With their fourth album, Mermaid Avenue created an alt-country masterpiece that will satisfy even the pickiest listeners. They poured heart and soul into every lyric and song, making this album so catchy, memorable, and ear-appealing, just like this genre should sound in 2026. You should definitely put “Jacarandas” on your music radar because it will immediately win your heart. Do not miss it!
