You can tell the band thought about every single movement. These are complex structures with clever arrangements that show off some seriously outstanding musicianship. The band blends alternative metal and post-metal with touches of psychedelia and even some of those cold, sharp moments you’d expect from third-wave black metal. The production is crisp and allows every instrument to breathe, which is vital when you’re dealing with music this dense. It’s a record that rewards the listener who pays attention to the details, the small sonic maneuvers that happen in the background while the main themes are playing out. The vocal performance on this album is, quite frankly, beautiful. It’s not just about hitting the notes, but about the soul and the harmony that the vocalist brings to the table. The generous serving of melody here elevates the listening experience to a completely different height. The vocal layers and back vocals are used strategically to create an otherworldly atmosphere that perfectly suits the dreaming theme of the title.
For a gear nerd or anyone who appreciates the technical side of the instrument, there is so much to listen to here. The guitarists deliver a comprehensive collection of jangly, angular, and mesmerizing chord progressions. When they lean into the distorted riffs, the tone is thick and powerful, but it never loses that melodic clarity. There’s a distinct 90s-alt influence in the clean sections that feels very nostalgic but remains fresh. The riffs are tight and heavy, reminiscent of that classic post-metal wall of sound but with more rhythmic complexity. You can also hear those echoing, reverb-drenched themes that make you feel like you’re drifting through a cinematic noir landscape. You can’t have post-metal of this caliber without a rhythm section that knows how to drive the vehicle. The bass guitar sounds amazing. It brings a lot of groove and depth to the sonic equation, but it also provides a level of clarity that is often missing in heavy mixes. You can hear the individual notes, the nerve of the strings, and the way the low-end binds rhyhtmic patterns and the guitars together. The drumming is detailed, dynamic, and powerful. There are layers of detail added through well-accentuated beats, breaks, and fills. The drummer uses percussive acrobatics to keep the pace engaging, moving from slow, atmospheric pulses to high-intensity segments without ever breaking the groove. It’s that balance of power and finesse that keeps the album going even during its longest, most experimental passages.
Thematically, Śnienie is an exploration of the gateways. The band uses the concept of the pupil, the regulator of light, to explore the balance between the inner and outer worlds. It’s about the visible meeting the invisible. The lyrics and the general atmosphere of the record deal with existentialism, the nature of dreams, and the search for balance in a world that is often lopsided toward darkness. The band bridges the gap between those calm, soothing, and relaxing otherworldly moments and the crushing reality of their heavier side. It’s a feverish road movie for the ears, as some might say, but with a much more philosophical bent. Śnienie is a true masterpiece of the contemporary Polish underground. Źrenice took building blocks of alternative metal and post-metal and constructed something of an album for people who love their intelligent and heavy music. It’s a record that demands your attention and rewards you with a deep, immersive experience. If you appreciate bands that aren’t afraid to experiment with melody, harmony, and complex structures, you need to add this to your collection. Źrenice has provided the gateway, and all you have to do is step through.
