Anana Kaye – Cordelia

A Nashville-based singer-songwriter, Anana Kaye, has recently released a fine piece of sonic artistry that immediately penetrates your ears, grabs you by the collar, and transports you to a completely different universe, built upon brilliant ideas and outstanding orchestrations. “Cordelia” is her second piece of work this year, representing a debut single from “Are You There,” the highly anticipated full-length album you should immediately place on your music radar. Lyrically, the album tackles various themes, but mainly focuses on the global chaos we’re witnessing daily. Recorded against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, Georgia’s struggle for freedom, and the tensions of life in the States, it is a reflection of our uncertain, chaotic, and deeply human times, exploring the challenges of navigating this new world disorder we’re living in. Anana Kaye explores various sentiments, moods, situations, and circumstances by infusing profound, poetic, storytelling lyricism into her songs, and that’s the case with “Cordelia” as well. Sonically, Anana Kaye blends a singer-songwriter approach with some of the finest properties borrowed from alternative and indie rock, but do not be surprised if you stumble upon some other styles along the way. She expertly channels nostalgia by evoking eighties music, an era when mentioned genres ruled the airwaves, yet you’ll also notice how she infused all the qualities that meet the trends in modern music production.

From the onset, Anana Kaye seamlessly balances tender, delicate, calm melodies with tremendous groove and energy. As soon as you press play, you’ll notice how this composition carries a certain drive, forcing you to dance to the rhythm. Yet there is a sort of calmness attached, allowing contemplation about the themes covered throughout the entire song. Details like these vividly showcase Anana Kaye’s songwriting, composing, arranging, and producing abilities, as she navigates difficult themes through a catchy, memorable, engaging, danceable song. Each vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuver has its place and purpose here, guaranteeing a pleasant listening experience worth repeating over and over again. Kaye’s vocal performance guides you through the entire composition. Her nearly whispery voice seamlessly balances low, mid, and high notes with such precision and finesse, emphasizing everything she intended to achieve with this song. Besides guiding listeners, commanding attention, and elevating this track to new heights, her marvelous vocal performance also contributes more than necessary emotional depth and complexity over an already intricate structure. The interplays between various instrumentations bring that recognizable nostalgic sound that immediately wraps around your listening apparatus. Through the mixture of lush synth themes, melodies, harmonies, brass section accentuations, and chord progressions delivered on guitars, Anana Kaye constructs a one-of-a-kind listening experience rarely heard or seen on a contemporary music scene. The way all these layers articulate together without spoiling each other goes beyond comprehension so many times. Each element, detail, accentuation, and decoration contributes to an otherworldly, ethereal, lush ambiance.

You’ll notice how equally impressive the section resonates with tremendous power from scratch to finish. Beneath all those luxuriant keys, intricate guitars, and brass accentuations, the bass guitar rumbles, offering more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth while acting as a glue between mentioned instrumentations and rhythmic patterns. Those rich, detailed, deep, and heavy low-ends bring more groove, detail, warmth, and complexity to the song without ever overpowering it. Thanks to excellent drumming, this composition sounds so dynamic, energetic, and powerful while respecting the delicacy and calmness of all those orchestrations. Alongside the guitars, this drumming perfomance almost leans towards funky and disco sound, but it also stays within alternative and indie circles. You’ll hear how all those beats, breaks, fills, accentuations, and other percussive acrobatics keep everything in line while dictating groove and pace. Each instrument has its place and purpose here, making this composition such a pleasant listening experience. “Cordelia” is a marvelous alternative/indie song that vividly showcases the brilliance of an artist. It’s a composition that carries so many qualities that it’s impossible to grasp them all in one listening, and it definitely rewards repeated listens with all those details and nuances that make this composition so catchy, hypnotic, and irresistible. “Cordelia” is an indie masterpiece, garnered with some of the finest ideas and musicianship you’ll hear in a while, and you should immediately head to your favorite streaming platform and check it out.
