A hard-working indie rock band, Freight, is back with another fine piece of sonic artistry that will immediately appeal to anyone who appreciates catchy, memorable, engaging music, written and composed straight from the heart. “The Only Thing I Know” is their second piece of work in 2025 and a second standalone single in total, arriving after “Me,” a critically acclaimed composition released earlier this year that you should also check out as soon as possible. The indie scene has become oversaturated with all those artists and bands trying to reinvent the same old wheel over and over again, but thankfully, Freight’s music stands out thanks to a fresh and unique sound that breaks the rules and shapeshifts the boundaries of what indie rock music can be. By blending qualities that meet all those trends in modern music production with some subtle touches of nineties alternative rock nostalgia, “The Only Thing I Know” differs from anything you could possibly hear on the music scene nowadays. It’s one of those tracks that immediately wraps around your listening apparatus and refuses to let go long after the last notes and beats fade. Of course, there also some elements borrowed from power pop and rock ‘n’ roll for some extra kick, and these are all great edition to this sonic equation. The band uses all these additional sonic ingredients as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to uplift their music to new heights while simultaneously remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, the pleasant listening experience is more than guaranteed.
“The Only Thing I Know” immediately kicks off with hypnotic, irresistible, addictive energy. As soon as you press play, you’ll hear how these talented musicians poured heart and soul into this composition. Their songwriting, composing, arranging, and producing abilities immediately shine thanks to a perfect song structure, garnered by many profoundly detailed segments, brilliant ideas, and superb instrumentations. The vocals serve as a centerpiece of this sonic equation. You’ll notice how sincere, confident, emotive, and powerful vocal harmonies command attention, guide listening apparatus, and elevate everything to new heights. The additional vocal layers, back vocals, and sing-alongs contribute more than necessary emotional depth and complexity to an already intricate song structure. Through these sing-alongs, you can immediately hear how power pop and rock ‘n’ roll inspired these excellent musicians to write such an incredible track. In the meantime, the guitar’s shape is a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. You’ll hear how all those interplays between guitars build a detailed, catchy, memorable, engaging ambiance that immediately grabs you by the collar and refuses to let go. On one side, you’ll notice how all those themes, melodies, and harmonies shine, while the other side offers excellent chord progressions and riffs. There are generous servings of distortion applied to these instrumentations for extra rawness, abrasiveness, and grit, yet you’ll hear everything Fright intended to achieve with this song. Also, it’s nearly mindblowing how all these guitar works suit vocals harmoniously, making this track even more pleasant to the ears.
Of course, this track wouldn’t sound this good with a rock-solid rhythm section. Like guitars, the bass plays a significant role here. There are detailed, warm-sounding, powerful basslines rumbling beneath all those guitar layers, offering heaviness, clarity, and depth to the song while serving as a glue between all the mentioned instrumentations and rhythmic patterns. The drums elevate everything to an entirely new level, keep the remainder of the band in line, and dictate groove and pace through cleverly assembled, expertly performed, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics. Every instrument has its role here, contributing to the overall ambiance. Freight have crafted an indie rock masterpiece. “The Only Thing I Know” contains everything you ever needed from a proper indie song, plus more. There are brilliant ideas, superb musicianship, perfect structure, an enormous dosage of catchiness, everything you need to blast this track loud. Therefore, head to your favorite streaming platform and check it out!
